Does anyone know of a clever bit of software that can isolate a bassline from a recording? Does such a thing even exist?

Yes, but it's not perfect and you'll need a fully fledged DAW (digital audio workstation) to even attempt to use it.
It's called Peel - https://products.zplane.de/peel

What it does is identify the frequencies in a stereo signal and you then draw a box on the graph it creates to try and narrow down a range of frequencies.
The problem with isolating frequencies this way is that different instruments within a mix, will at times, share the same frequencies so you end up getting an output that is mainly, say Bass, but with bits of vocal etc as well, when the frequencies overlap.
To use Peel you'd need to 1. Get a DAW (Cubase/Studio One/Pro Tools/Ableton/Reason Reaper etc) 2. Create a new track and insert your stereo file on it. 3. Insert Peel as a plugin on that track 4. Use Peel to identify the bass frequencies 5. Export the track to a new file.

If that all sounds too complicated - well, it is quite complicated. If it's just one track you want doing, send me a message on Facebook to give me your email and I can have a go at isolating it for you as I have the software. I used it recently to isolate a Taylor Swift vocal track and put a new backing to it, for a bit of fun - https://soundcloud.com/the-credit-card- ... ean-spirit

Wow Nick thanks, that would be great if you really wouldn't mind spending the time on it. You are correct, it does sound incredibly complicated & akin to replicating the large hadron collider in the shed

I will drop you a Facebook message ..>

Bass returned from luthier yesterday where it's had a professional set up. Frets & fretboard polished, Truss rod, action & intonation adjusted, new flatwound strings fitted. Wow! It's even more gorgeous.

I've been wondering about adding a pickup cover to my Squier PJ bass. Aside from its purely cosmetic function, do any pick players here use one as a hand rest? I like the look it gives the bass & wondered if I might find it useful too.
