it sounds simple but its actually difficult to play i can't remember exactly what i did cos it was all in one takes, the guitars and lap steels were done in Alan Smythes tiny old studio's i haven't heard it for years and can't recall what key its in or the chords i might have a listen but don't like looking back

I tried and I tried... and I tired of trying to play Serious on the guitar. I just couldn't get it to sound right. However, I have a ukelele and I found a very effective way of playing it on that.

I have two problems here:
one is explaining how it's done (I don't always know what the chords are called and so on),
the other is that this is guitar talk and this is about the ukelele.

Should I go ahead anyway, or should I just say that I'm new here and I found this thread to be a very interesting and educational read and I look forward to seeing even more interesting stuff?

Don't Get Hung Up In Your Soul

So with my extremely limited knowledge, this sounds like:

D (open) Em (7th fret) A (5th fret) D (open)

Played in downstrokes like this: D DD/ Em Em Em Em / A A A A / D

There is also a strange chord chucked in there a couple of times in place of the Em. Anyone help me out with what that is?

Thanks.

Just wanted to add that those chords are plainly not what Richard is playing (I've just checked out the play.com video) but sound alright over the song.

Ashes on the fire

Sounds to me like:

Verse: D then playing A for quite a few bars
'Ashes on the fire' bit E to A
Occasionally there's a F#minor to E - i.e where he's singing "deep seated fears" and "read the flames". Playing those 4 chords sound ok to me.

This is my take on it. Having tried to work it out has given me a real appreciation of how great the song and arrangement is. Looking forward to seeing the Boss playing it live on Friday at Bexhill.

I may have got some of the "sevenths" wrong but it's hard to tell with all the instrumentation there. The transition bit foxed me for a while but then I realised the chords transpose up by 5 semitones. I haven't worked out the last bit of the outro as it's all strings.

....................Dm
Open up your door
.................................Cmaj7
I can't see your face no more
..........................Dm
Love is so hard to find
............................Cmaj7
and even harder to define

.........................Dm...........................Em
Oh open up your door cos we've time to give

........... .F.........................G
And I 'm feeling it so much more

...................Dm............G
Open up the door

....................Cmaj7
Open up your door

Verse Inst and Verse the same
Then it transposes up by 5 semitones i.e.

Instrumental: Gm7 Fmaj7 Gm7 Fmaj7 followed by
"So open up your door": Gm Am A# C

Final chorus (with the orchestra)
Gm C Fmaj7 Dm

Mark

Remorse code sounds deceptively simple and i'm easily deceived! Is there some kind of open tuning used for this?

Did anyone ever put up the chords to Richard's version of Lonesome Town. I love that.
