I currently have a basic Stagg 10GA practice amp. It's ok, but I'd like something with a better, warmer sound. I don't want to break the windows - or the bank. Any recommendations?

i and many others are big fans of the vox pathfinder 15r- definitely has a warm retro sound for a solid state amp and comes with reverb and a nice tremolo but not a tonne of digital effects and modelling which i find unneccessary and usually sounds bad-

true but they can be a lot of fun,i got my boy a Peavey Vyper which is ace and has really opened his mind to"sounds"and the possibilities for playing guitar,he plays for ever with the backwards effect and it has loads of different amp sounds from super clean to insanely distorted,i would've loved one of those as a kid,i think they sound ok meself.........not a classic tube amp or a vintage amp but if your not recording or playing in a band what use is that when you can't afford loads of effects?.........but a lot of entertainment can be had out of them which can be inspiring to those of a tender age.........or even old gits like me i mess about with the amp loads

well when you put it like that haha... no no im just going by the bad ones ive played that were that bad- I think it was a Fender thing, the effects just sounded bad- there are gooduns to be found im sure- 97 pounds sounds like a pretty good deal! Just whatever ya do lofty- dont get a Fender Frontman... :puker: when i got my Hagstrom last yr I borrowed one for a while and it made me dislike the guitar until I got a proper amp and I realised it was just the amp- sounds great thru every amp but that

I have an old model Vox Valvetronix (30W). They have been updated a couple of times and I think this is the latest model in a 20w version:

Lots of amp types and effects and a valve/solid state combination (if it really makes any difference). As Richard says lots of fun messing around with the settings, although you need to beware that you don't take all your practice time messing about with sounds instead of improving your playing (I am afraid that is what I tend to do, I am sure I would be a better player if my amp just had an on/off switch and a volume knob).

Some of the effects are towards the heavier rock end of the spectrum although they still leave plenty of other sounds to concentrate on. Google will bring up a few demos on YouTube etc.

Crikey, lots to think about here. I'd probably be best to go for something with not too many toys. As you say, Tregolwyn, I'd never get any serious practice done, for twiddling the knobs. Although the Peavey looks like a great deal of fun for not too much money. I've also looked up reviews of the Roland Cube, Marshall MG15 DFX, and Vox VT20+ Valvetronix (very taken with that one). I have an SG copy which sounds great through my tutor's professional Marshall amp.

Yeah i was between amps and electrics- as I'd sold my last ones to buy something else- so I was playing acoustic at the time- but when I bought the hag i didnt have an amp for meself so I had to borrow one to start with - I learnt on acoustic though - some say it gives you better technique later on which is probably true- but I imagine you'd get kids more interested in playing with an electric early on...

anyway i do see your point- makes a lot of sense

Father-in-law has one of the Vox Valvetronix amps which sound ace, loads of nice effects / amp models etc and very easy to use too.

Ey up Dusty, how are you? I'll definitely take a look at that website.

Think it's going to be the Peavey or the Vox. I'm looking forward to trying out some new sounds. 8)
