So I am trying to learn some Lightin' Hopkins style fingerpickin' blues and am struggling here. Any tips for keeping that right hand rhythm going on the bass strings independent of the melody?

Do you practice the bass on it's own, then the melody or is it best to grimly bash on through with both hands one sodding bar at a time? This is killing me :)

I'd be really grateful for any tips, ta.

These are really good

I'd start with the beginners fingerpicking guitar techniques

The Happy Traum and fred Sokolow stuff is good too.

It's all down to how long it takes for the brain to allow an Independent Thumb.

So your thumb won't want to cooperate; but keep playing those same notes over and over again until your woman leaves you. This could take a good few months; but then you'll know your getting somewhere! And keep going until your dog leaves you; and then you'll REALLY know your getting somewhere - and on and on.
