I'm selling a load of stuff on ebay to try and raise some money to buy a fender telecaster.

The question is should I get a Mexican one or search for a cheap second hand American one? Is the step up in price good value for money?

Would you go for a new Mexican (that has the right feel) over a second hand American bought off ebay that I wouldn't be able to try out for example?

Are there any copies that are worth getting? I've heard that Greco (1970s Japanese) copies are the business.

Help!

...well I went out to buy a strat there was about twelve in the shop. The best one by a mile was one of the Mexican ones. I don't think they are all great but some are. I think it's worth getting down to a Fender shop and trying some just to see if there is much difference. I also like the fact that the Mexican Fenders generally don't have thick coated polyurethane on the necks, feels more organic. Buying unseen is always a risk , liking the feel of a guitar is such a personal thing. Many say the Mex Fenders have worse electronics, although it didn't seem too different to me.

Watch out for late 70's Fenders, some of em are right pigs

Cheers for that. I reckon trying it out in the shop might be the way to go.

Thanks very much for the advice Richard. I reckon I'm gonna try as many as I can.

I've gotta do an expedition up to Sheff soon. Now I've got two reasons: Hendersons Relish and Wavelength!

If you can afford a bit more the Baja Tele's are really nice - especially if you like a fat neck on your guitar. The Telecaster forum tdpri.com has loads of opinions and advice as well.

I got one of these Squier Classic Vibe tele's a couple of years ago, cost me £230, it's loosely based on the very first JV series teles that came out in the 80's, it's a lovely guitar, it's my main guitar for Roaming Son and has seen a fair bit of action. the necks lovely and the pickups sound great too.
well worth checking out!
i've got this one -

they've just brought it out in blonde too, and they do a nice bound sunburst & a thinline as well.

The Baja telecasters look good and thanks for that forum, I'll be reading through that for sure.

Nice guitar MR L. A mate of mine said he was bought a Squier and he tried loads and then he picked up one that felt head and shoulders better than the others. Interesting how guitars can be so different.

yeah it's surprising how so many 'cheaper' guitars sound & feel better than the more expensive ones.
Few years ago i was after a Strat and i was after a proper Fender, i tried out loads and saw an old Tokai for around £100 cheaper, and it sounded ace, pissed all over the Fenders really. ended up buying it!

will be expecting pics of the new addition when u get it!

Definetly check out the baja telecaster. Unbelivable value for money. It has that real tele twang that you only get with much more expensive teles and custom shop teles.Check it out.

i bought a fender squier telecaster custom in real time music (chesterfield) about three years ago and it's one of the nicest guitars i've ever played.
