I would also recommend the Mexican Teles. They are good stock, and also very easy to upgrade with bridges, pickups etc, should you want to.

The slightly upmarket ones like the 50s and 60s Classics are really nice too, great necks and superb pickups.

The Bajas are good too, if you like chunkier necks, the pickups are Custom Shop ones, but some of them can be very heavy.

Squier Classic Vibes are nice, but you have to like the thin necks. I had a CV50s for a while, didnt get on with the neck, the gloss finish on it, and the weight. Would suit others though.

The American Stds are nice, but you are stuck with the 6 saddle bridge on them as they are not easy to convert to vintage style if you like that set-up. They do have the nicest sounding neck pickups though IMO. The Mexican Stds are an easy mod though.

Check out the www.tdpri.com for loads of Tele buying advice and opinion.

I gig regularly with my two modded MIM Std Teles, solid as rocks.

THanks for that. Upgrading the pickups sounds like a good idea. Good to get the advice of everyone on here. A wealth of knowledge!

How about Japanese Tele's? I'm considering getting a late 80s one.

After all this Tele talk I hope you put a clip on here when you finally get one. :)

Right! In the end I got a mid 1980s Japanese Fender Squire Telecaster. Very happy with it indeed. It sounds unbelievably good and plays very nicely. And it only cost £200. I bought it off ebay from a guy called Craig in Sheffield! Surely not THE Craig? Bit of a risk, but well worth it in the end.

Really like that Tele - is that sonic blue?

I've actually started building a custom '72 deluxe, basically because I like that slightly 'Jazzmastery' look and big strat headstock.
I had a game finding a '72 style scratchplate with standard P90/humbucker mounting holes - didn't fancy shelling out for the original wide (and expensive) Fender jobs. Managed to get one from a Squire replica in the end.

All I've gotta do now is put it all together...
