So I finally bought (one of) my dream guitar(s)...

It's a 1979 3-pick up LP Custom that someone has disconnected the middle p'up on so that only the traditional combinations are available.

I'm keen to reinstate it in a way that will leave the proper combinations possible but will allow the middle one to be brought in as needed - probably via a push-pull pot. I've done some Googling but can't seem to get a clear answer how best to do this. Or what options might exist re controlling volume and tone. btw I really do not want to be adding any new switches or knobs to the guitar, other than something completely hidden such as the pot mentioned above.

Also, the paintwork is pretty worn and I'd really like to get at least the top refinished. I've spoken to a couple of local-ish people but they were 1) not keen to take on the work and 2) a bit edgy about suggesting what it might cost... Anyone any ideas of a ballpark figure for a top refinish? btw there's almost no paint left on the neck but it's lovely like that - reminds me of the neck on my LP Special.

Any thoughts or pointers would be much appreciated.

Liking the new forum format - very slick...

Not local to you, but this chap is known to be top notch, and pretty reasonable in price.

Thanks for that - I'll try to give him a bell during the week.

Interesting that there doesn't seem to be any info re re-finishing on the site... It seems like you can find any number of people to knock your gear about and make it look "relic'd" (horrible phrase, daft concept) but getting it tidied up is much more difficult.

I'm sure Jan Akkerman took his guitars into the local BMW franchise when they needed a paint job - or maybe it's one of those urban myths thingies...

Thanks for the replies...

Manchesterguitartech is one of the people not doing any paintwork at the moment - a shame because the quality of his work looks fantastic on the site.

I've heard a few stories about people taking their guitars to garages for painting (Joe Strummer being one, I think) but I've always wondered if using the 'wrong' kind of paint could cause problems.

Then again, my Beetle needs quite a bit of paintwork sorting out - maybe I could get a good package deal for car + guitar... Not sure bright orange would suit the LP though.

The strap in that picture is actually made from VW upholstery, as it happens...

Nice find ..>

For what it is worth I wouldn't touch the finish. It's an honest guitar thats been played a bit. But it's not my decision.....

The wiring job should be simple enough for a decent tech.

Cheers

I know what you mean but those two patches of bare wood bug me a bit. It's looking like it's not going to get refinished anyway - even if I could find someone to do the work I bet it would be painfully expensive.

Maybe I'll just colour the patches in with a marker pen :D
