I'm currently on the lookout for a decent Semi-style electric new or used for around the sub-500 mark.
I've only ever played solids before.
I'm a little bit overwhelmed with all the choice. My first instinct was a far Eastern Epi Casino or Sheraton, but i'm not sure of the quality anymore??
The Ibanez Artcore's look really cool but I can't find that much info on sound/build quality etc.
I also like the look of the Gretsch Electromatic's, but are they anyway near the sound of a real US Gretsch's?
I thought this is probably the best place to come to for advice on the classic semi sound. I tend to mostly play Beatles and bluesy stuff, so would prefer P90's rather than humbucker pups
Any ideas folks??

The gretsch electromatics are great. The epiphone casinos are great guitars for the price. Try to get a secondhand one from the Korean peerless factory as they are far superior to the chinese ones but both are good guitars

Yeah the Electromatics are great. I have a 5129 and it plays nice and has a really sweet sound, the best sounding of all my electrics. I kind of wish it wasn't so, then I would have an excuse to upgrade to the full on Gretschs but I couldn't bear to sell the one I have.

Depends on what sound you are after, mate of mine has a couple of Ibanez 335 style guitar and they are great, very versatile. the Electromatics on the other hand have the instant twangy sound, very good value for money, my dads got one and i thought it was the best sounding guitar ever, until he bought a 6120 re-issue. (thats why theres a price difference!).
Tried a couple of peerless guitars and they are ace too, although you could try and get an old Antoria off ebay? i've got a Jazzstar which is loosely based on a Gibson L-5. they wer made in the late 70's / early 80's. mine sounds lovely, jazzy, fat & warm.
Good luck!
