I've just been watching this J Mascis 'Rig Rundown' thingy and can't believe how high he has his action.
I know Stevie Ray Vaughan had it high too.
Can anybody tell me the reason for this besides playing slide? What are the advantages for normal playing etc?
Just looking at Mascis' guitars brings back horrific memories of my first electric (a Kay Les Paul) that was almost impossible to play.
Nice Jazzmasters though.

Have a peep from 5.30 for the stuff about action.

Yeh, got a high action on 2 of my strats (big SRV fan). got a set of 11's on and some bigger frets. seem to be able to get more tone out of the guitar.
I like to play heavy too and you can really thrash it and dig into the strings.
Also got the J.mascis squier too thats set up a bit lower. The actions nowhere near as high as his!
Great rig rundown, i bet it's loud onstage.
