Anyone got any suggestions as to a good one or which to avoid?

I got given a couple of Planet Waves clip on tuners and I do like em. That said you can have a bit of trouble on stage if you're playing an acoustic and you've got lots of other instruments/noise around you. Think they cost about £12-£20. To be honest I've not really used any before though so don't have much of a frame of reference.

A Snark is what you want, they really have got the market covered now, because they have no trouble with the lower strings and are very easy to see, very accurate too and cheap!
