Hi Richard. Just wanted to know if you've ever tried TV Jones pickups. I have a gretsch nashville with standard filtertrons which sound great. I noticed that some of the gretsch models have TV Jones pickups. Some of the Brian Setzer models have them. Are they that much better the the standard filtertrons?

From what I can gather - they have a higher output than the stock Gretsch pickups, and have a more detailed sound. People have said that the current Gretsch filtertron pickups are really great, but lack a bit of the the warmth of the originals. I personally can't comment about filtertrons though....

I have a 6128TSP Duo Jet which is fitted with the stock Gretsch single coil 'Dynasonics' - they too are lower output than the original '50's DeArmond dynasonic fitted to Gretsch guitars (at that time '54-'57, they didn't make their own pickups - they bought them in).

I'm literally about to receive a delivery from the U.S; Seymour Duncan Dynasonics - they are a dead spit and sound of a mid '50's dynasonic. In louder situations, they don't 'whistle' like the modern Gretsch one's either. I haven't heard a bad thing about them, but they are bloody expensive though.....

Those dynasonics sound great. The tv jones filtertrons cost about €200.The factory fitted ones sound great. Don't know if its worth it or not.

Not got them yet - the only way I could get them was via a shop in the U.S.

The U.K importer - Aria - take frikkin' ages. I ordered a custom built set of Seymour Duncan Alnico 'staple' pickups for one of my Gibson archtops back in October. They are the pickups fitted to the L-5/Super 400/Byrdland in the mid 50's before the humbucker - they look like P90s but have rectangular pole pieces - soundwise, think Scotty Moore on Elvis' 'Mystery Train' + 'My Baby Left Me'.)

They only arrived last week. However, the good news is that Seymour Duncan himself made them  I'm having them mounted on a Gibson L-4CES

Re; the Dynasonics - I was put in touch with a shop in America - they got them made in 6 weeks. They should arrive this week.

Your a lucky man to own a gibson L-4. I just love that scotty moore sound. Especially the early sun studios stuff. Just 3 guy's making a glorious noise. Now and then (theres a fool such as I) is one of my favourites. Show us a picture when you get the pickups fitted.

'Fool Such As I' was Hank Garland on a Gibson ES 345

I'll post when it's done - the L-4 is a nice guitar. I know this is a Gretsch based thread, but Gibson's are my favourite guitars by a long mile. I have two other Gibson archtops (L-5 + Super 400) and seeing that they more or less cover the same ground, I thought i'd change the L-4 to '50's style alnicos. It was already damaged a little bit - it, like the other two, has a spruce top but has a hairline crack running from one of the f-holes, so it was the obvious contender.

I didn't know that was hank garland. It's an amazing track don't you think. The smiths did a cover version of it in the eighties but they split up before they had a chance to release it. I have an early 90's epiphone casino with p90's. Just put a bigsby b7 on it. I also have a gretsch 6120 nashville which is fantastic. It's a 2006 model in orange.

It's a great track - the b-side 'I need your love tonight' is fantastic too. It's actually Hank Garland on all Elvis material between '58 and '61; until he was permanently injured in a car crash. It was at the insistance of Tom Parker that Elvis original band be replaced with the Nashville 'A'team session guys. The records after '58 have a definite change of sound about them - and that's why; different guys playing on them. Still great though.

Alongside those other tracks, my favourite Garland/Elvis moments are 'Little Sister' - he's using a Fender Jazzmaster on that one and 'big hunk o'love' - that's the 345 again. Considering he was at his best and most comfortable playing Be-bop Jazz, he positively burns on the rock and roll stuff. My old guitar teacher (Adrian Ingram) met Hank a couple of times - he still had all his guitars, but could barely play as he had been brain damaged in the accident. A sad loss.

After '61 Scotty Moore made a return on some of the records. I actually met Scotty over in Nashville about 3 years ago - It's the only time i've gone weak kneed about meeting someone; I said something rubbish like 'I play guitar because of you...' - he came back immediately with 'don't lay your blame at my door boy...'

top geezer 8)

That's a great line! :D

He is a top bloke - I saw him at a few Elvis conventions and he was so patient with the hordes of fans trying to get his autograph - despite suffering from jet lag and everyone wanting a piece of him or his time (I wasn't one of them for a change!) 8)

Carlh - Here's my L-4 with the Seymour Duncan 'Staple' pickups - the same type used by Scotty Moore on his L-5

They sound great -I haven't done a gig with it yet, but for the first time in ages, i've sat down with a stack of old Elvis 78's,EPs and his 1st UK LP and jammed along. I played it through a tweed deluxe and an old Boss analogue delay (DM-3) - it gets that Scotty Moore thing easily - he seems to use both pickups a lot, then on songs like 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy' it's the bridge. Great pickups. I'm really pleased with them.

You going to TV Jones that 6120 then?

No I haven't taken the plunge yet. Before I do any open heart surgery I would love to try a gretsch with the tv jones fitted just to hear the difference. Money is a bit tight at the moment. I might wait a while. The standard ones are great. I just want to hear the difference

I finally got my Seymour Duncan Dynasonics for the Duo Jet today - I put them on and what a difference! That guitar is just plain-old rude now - it'll spit venom but still retains that shimmery quality when the volume's turned down a little. The stock ones were a bit anaemic in comparison.

I'm gigging it tonight - should be interesting
