Loving it! ... was listening earlier to a recording of Richard at the Leadmill in 2003 (thanks Denise) and there's all this chatter ... I'm trying to work out how to match the voices to any Sheffield forum folk and come up and give 'em a little slap for that

That's brilliant I cannot understand why people pay money to see someone perform and then talk through it - or (as happened at the City Varieties, the first time I saw Richard perform live) people who have so much to drink before the gig starts that they come in late, start talking really loudly amongst themselves and then have to keep going out to the loo all the time (always in ones, never together) ... what's the point?

I just find it incredibly disrespectful to the artist that is performing. I wonder how these people would feel if they were up on the stage?

Good man! And, as that audience proved, most people DO want to listen to the performance as opposed to some wankers nattering. It is one of the most soul-destroying things and then if you ask people to be quiet, they either talk louder or turn really nasty and aggressive. Can't win.

I don't see the sence is asking people to be quiet at gigs, if they havent got the decency to not yack on during the gig they probably arent interest in any polite requests so I find a bit of well measured mild agressivness in your tone and an 'I'll box the ears off you' look normally does the job

pretty sure I've posted along these lines somewhere else in here as one of my pet hates of all time (along with smoking at gigs, which thank fuck is now in the past). There has to be a word for that horrific chatter that sits above an audience at a gig, its sort of just feeds back on itself and resonates and fucks me off, specifically in gorgeous quiet songs. Worst I have ever been to was an elbow gig in manchester ages and ages ago. When they did scattered black and whites and all I could hear was this sort of 'ruffleruffleruffleruffle'. and the stupid bint at the half man half biscuit gig who sang EVERY frigging line just before he did to show how ace she was at knowing the lyrics. And the bastard who WHISTLED along to a whole teenage fanclub gig except for the one with whistling in it. I went to a tom mcrae gig in liverpool and everyone was dead quiet in the songs, it was ace. (went to another of his in manchester 'ruffleruffleruffleruffle')

i hate it with a passion,i did an acoustic gig with Shez some years ago in Sweden and the audience just talked all the way through after two songs i walked off the ONLY time i have ever done that in my life...the best was after the fuckers complained...........

you've answered a question for me there, I always wondered if the artists actually hear it and if it affects you. I couldn't imaging trying to concentrate on something beautiful with that crap going on. I suppose if it was something majorly rocked up and loud then it prob doesn't matter, but on something quiet and acoustic, if nothing else disrespectful to the person on stage. I think tweedy went prob a bit too far with his rant, but i don't think its out of order for an artist to ask the audience to be quiet if they want to hear you at your best.

I don't think he went too far at all. i think its good that people the other side of the mic are willing to come out and say stuff like that lets face it he just said everything that people here have expressed about talkers. His solo shows are quite quiet affairs he even does some songs totally unplugged and without the mic plenty of those "gorgeous quiet songs" and you know why should those moments be ruined by a few cocksuckers. I have seen him solo and its magical and you can hear a pin drop somtimes and its basically a sea of smiling people listening to somone who's there because they genuinly want to play for you. I am sure there are plenty of artists out there who would just think fuck it play on and take the pay check and write the gig off as one of them nights.
