Not all styles used em but the most volumised and daring ones did. Helped it defy gravity. Me mam's hairdresser used to use them. She used to have a beehive and they used like a piece of foam to help support it that went inside. Sometimes lacquer, bob pins and rolling rags and grease weren't enough to get the volume effect and to hold their elephants trunk hairstyles in. You probably didn't want to know that but i'm right into my retro hair.

Does anyone have the first women of Rockabilly website address that was on here about a year go? It had some ace womens rockabilly quiffs on it and these ladies were way way ahead of their times & and the teddy boy styles, amazing website and fantastic pics from the london east end.

This is a great site with amazing photos from back in the day

http://www.teddygirl.co.uk/photos.htm

Ken Russell's stunning photos of London's Teddy Girls first appeared in the Picture Post of June, 1955. More recently they have wowed gallery-goers at the Spitz in East London (near where much of the original shoot took place), and at the V!P's gallery in Rotterdam. From 13-16th October 2006 the exhibition will be featured at the world famous Hemsby Rock 'n' Roll Weekender - www.hemsbyrocknroll.co.uk

Contact Joe Cushley for further info 0777 574 4867 or joecushley@yahoo.co.uk

The photos are copywright of Ken Russell - www.kenrussellenterprises.com, and Topfoto - The UK's number one independent photo archive - www.topfoto.co.uk
