Tried doing this a few weeks ago, from another hints site, it didnt work, but may have done something not right. Anyone had success with this?

Yes, done quite a few. But that was with the older iTunes, I'll try some more today and check it still works.

Yep, it works. I think I may do it slightly differently.

Make sure your preference for CD import is to AAC.

Minimise everything on the PC except for iTunes and make that so it is a smaller window so you can see the desktop behind it.

Follow the instructions on that page to choose the start and end times of the piece of music you want to be your ringtone.

Right mouse, choose 'create AAC' file.

When the smaller version of the song appears drag it up to the desktop, rename the file extenstion to m4r, then drag the file down to iTunes. Delete the original smaller file. Return to the original song and remove the start and end times you set.

Attach iPhone, if you are manually managing (which I recommend so you can choose exactly what is on the iPhone) just drag the song over to the phone.

And if you are an MP3 importer don't forget to return your preferences to that.

Tip - choose louder songs from your iTunes as the ringtone on the iPhone can be fairly quiet. Some of the songs I wanted to use had very low sound levels - I often wonder why there is not a standard for the levels that CDs are issued in as a lot of them vary.
