If you value your sanity do not take the latest upgrade. As soon as you connect your iPod it will freeze so don't bother with it.

(This thread will be deleted in a couple of days, just info for those on here who will be upgrading before Apple sort out the bugs of their new release.)

Okay, I've solved that problem.

Seems that once you connect the iPod/phone you just have to wait even if the program appears to have hung. So Mac users you'll get a spinning beach ball, Windows users it will show in task manager as not responding.

Mine took about 10 minutes and now seems okay (although I may be back later if anything else happens as I synch the new applications).

Blow that, have had enough IT problems lately!

Our servers at work have been playing up all morning so everything has been really slow - I'm not putting up with that at home as well! :?

Seems the delay only occurs if, like me, you manually synch your iPod.

Oh and the upgrade that makes the new applications work is not yet available so don't waste your time downloading any of those yet.

I think its wise to wait a few days after a software update appears as there are usually bugs that need fixing... Image

Tips for those who do the download.

After the software has downloaded your iPod will be backed up - the time that will take depends on how much you have on the machine (I recommend removing stuff to speed this up!).

Then the software goes on the iPod.

Then the back up is restored to the iPod. During this restore your PC will drive you mad because it will keep flashing back to iTunes from whatever you are doing!!!

I wish I'd known about removing stuff because mine has so far taken over an hour and a half!

iPhone users get the download free, Touch users should be paying for it but as we're not being asked to log into our accounts to get the software it is possible that Apple are not charging us for it today (could be a goodwill gesture for the problems early users had yesterday.)

Okay - do not, do not, do not do anything while the iPod is restoring.

I have sat here for over an hour with it restoring and flicking itself to iTunes and back, and occasionally whatever keystroke I was doing at the time it flicked told it to stop the restore, but a message came up asking do you want to stop and you could say no.

But finally whatever keystroke I was doing told it YES so I now have a blank iPod and have to start all over again.

It's not just the music with the Touch, it's the settings, the set yup of wi fi, e-mail, contacts, calender, notes etc.

It's technology ... I just ignore it all until somehow something magical happens. :?

Well I have finally got it restored but it's lost all my settings, so much for them doing a back up to stop that happening!

If I'd known two hours ago that I would not get those back I would just have shoved some music on it and gone out.

Note down your settings chaps, you might need them.

sorry to hear about all the probs Denise, hope you get it sorted, i know thats not much consolation :eh?
theres been a lot of discusion on the apple support forums that may be useful if you haven't already read them

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1595207&tstart=0
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=149

but can i repeat what i said earlier to anyone that hasn't yet updated their itunes / iphone, DON'T UPDATE YET, wait until all the problems are ironed out. Its extremely common now for software companies to release their products with small (and sometimes large) bugs, even on expensive pro software such as Logic Pro, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Cubase etc. all the biggies (essentially using their customers as bug reporters)... nothing is that urgent to have to have all the 'bells and whistles' running on an iphone / ipod surely

PS
you don't mind me calling your shirley do you

I know, usually I wait until I've seen what the problems are, but I was keen to try out the Apps, and for the new functionality. If they had just allowed the restore to run in background and not set iTunes to keep wanting to be on top I'd have got it all finished ages ago.

Got my e-mail account restored and all my favourites which is what I needed for on the go and now am about to be gone.

My name is dotted around those discussion boards. Trouble is there's no way of warning people in advance, they only go on there once they hit a problem. At least I've warned users on here about it.

I shall leave this topic on here till they release the update of iTunes that sorts the iTunes problems out (e.g. hanging for ages when connecting the iPod) and then it goes.

I'm guessing there will be a patch to fix these issues next week. apple are too keen these days to release software that's not ready for their hardware and in the long run are damaging their reputation...

From what's been said on those discussion boards, Apple have really messed up this time, plus the O2 fiasco from yesterday. They bit off a bit more than they could chew with a worldwide launch. Staggered as per the original phone launch might well have been better. They know their products are popular and attract lots of people wanting them 'NOW'.

Yes, I guess next week there will be another massive download of an upgrade.
