has anybody else noticed how many pubs are going bust? in the past 4 months, 5 local pubs near where i live have shut down and there's at least another 3 going in the next area of leeds.

is it the smoking ban? the ridiculous price of a drink these days? what's it like in your neck of the woods? how many have shut down? it's our national heritage slowly draining away.

With the smoking ban andthe economic climate I think that the traditional boozer is in for a long hard slog. Unfortunately I suspect that all the chain, corporate get the students in and sell them two for one alcopops joints will continue to thrive.

I don't go to our locals all that much now, but then they're normally just full of 40yo+ fat, bald booze hounds, so it all gets a bit boring. i think the chain pubs that all have the same decor have ruined it a bit as well, a lot of places are all the same now.

If i could find a local pub that has a good jukebox, a pool table/dartboard, some young people in there and isn't a total dump, i'd go every night.

i lament their passing also,it is a sad time for social life in britain for me i can't be arsed with loud clubs and hate pubs with over loud music and telly's in them....its NOT my age i have ALWAYS been like this i like a peaceful vibe where you can have a conversation and a laugh too...i don't mind a tune or two on an actual instrument or a game of domino's

:eh?
They have to go somewhere too!

It's all really sad. There's no doubt in my mind that the smoking ban has been the main culprit. There have been lots of economic down-turns where pubs have still managed to survive before.
The prices don't help at all though, but I suppose the pub owners have had no choice but to hike up the costs.

Where I live they used to say we had 52 houses & 26 pubs. We had pubs next door to each other. I've been here 25 years & many have been pulled down. Those remaining are over-full & you can't talk over the music. I tend to only go in a pub now when I'm on holiday.

There used to a lot more pubs around here. I don't think they can compete with the newer chains where they serve cheap food and let kids run riot. It is a shame.

The pub a few doors down from my house used to be full of underage kids who'd get slaughtered on two pints & then come by here & wake everyone up at 2am. Complained no end of times. It all changed when a girl was followed & murdered after one such night. Awful business.

You're a cheerful bugger, loftyeric. Don't think we should leave you alone posting late at night again

Here in good ole Yankeeland, half the bars in our city went belly-up after the smoking ban came in. It wasn't so bad at first because they did it in summer so you could nip outside for a fag, but when the winter arrived nobody wanted to stand outside in the driving snow so we all just moved it to our living rooms. You'd start out thinking, well I'll just go across the road for a pint, then as soon as you wanted that first smoke and pondered freezing your bits off (and losing your seat), going home and opening a bottle seemed a lot more appealing. I don't think it was any coincidence that the off licenses started keeping longer hours and some even went to opening on Sundays, which never happened before that.

For me its the cost - we frequent a few quiet country[ish] pubs round our way - they're not hard to find - just have the one [or two] - and drive home to attack the cans bought at he local 'offie' for about 60p per pint.

A pic of the Broken Cross Rudheath Northwich - on the edge of the town and the countryside - and by a canal - have too much to drink and get a free car wash on the way home..

In Birmingham there's loads of pubs being abandon or closed, because they are large areas of Muslim population and they don't drink, so the business is over for loads of pubs over here. Is very sad indeed.
Also the smoking ban doesn't help either.
