coming from a family of nurses, soldiers and musicians i understand absolutely what your saying, all my family and friends in the north east joined up cos there was no real alternatives...........apart from selling drugs which isn't on the cards at all in our family.I watched the TV drama"Mo"last night with my wife and it was like looking at life under labour before iraq and after, where have all the good men and women politicians gone?

I watched that last night too. It was fantastic, what a rare breed she was.

I think the good people are still there, just not in political parties any more. I come from a family of bus drivers and posties and joined the Labour Party as soon as I was old enough (left over the Poll Tax, the whole slavish worship of the law thing didn’t sit well with me – after all, some of us wouldn’t even be able to vote if our ancestors had been so well behaved).

All the people who I knew then are still trying to change the world, just doing things on a lower key, in unions and for charities and pressure groups. And moaning a lot. Probably to people they don’t know in cyberspace. I keep my leftie head happy by being a union rep, sorting out people’s pay, trying to stop them getting made redundant or their pay being docked for looking after their kids when they’re poorly.

Hardly me and Che, riding off on our motorbikes, into the revolutionary sunset but it works for me. x

No, the best are the ones people have gone up ladders to do themselves. One in Hereford says "We can't go on like this... with suspicious minds," with Tory boy sporting an Elvis quiff.

But my preferred one is "Fuck off back to Eton" down the road from me in Hackney. Tell it like it is, brother!

Re a previous entry about my mum's election day tradition, I may adopt this phrase as my family's new polling day greeting to Tory candidates asking for my voter number. Feel it has the necessary weight and gravitas, clearly shows my intent, and has sufficient shock value to ensure no further conversation takes place.

Also, as the polling station is at my sons' school, it will serve a double purpose, ensuring I don't get invited to potentially tedious social events like PTA coffee mornings, Virgin Vie make over sessions or endless children's birthday parties.

Will discuss it with my mother, who has a set of tight rules as to what swearing is appropriate in what circumstance (ie she calls the kids little buggers but would never tell them to fuck off) and let you know.

Lastly, can I say that I have never heard the expression in my life (must be a Northern thang) – down Saff, our worst swear words mostly involve women's genitalia – but it is quite poetic nonetheless. Would approve of its use for a future album title although might finish off any fledgling career on Radio Two.
