42% bothered to vote

AV VOTE TURNOUT BY REGION
Eastern England - 43.1% (1.84 million voters)
London - 35.4% (1.86 million voters)
North-east England - 38.7% (0.76 million voters)
North-west England - 39.7% (2 million voters)
Scotland - 50.7% (1.98 million voters)
South-west England - 44.6% (1.8 million voters)
West Midlands - 39.8% (1.63 million people
Yorkshire and Humber - 39.9% (1.53 million voters)

So the majority of the population don't seem too interested, pretty poor show.

As a West Midlander, very ashamed of that percentage.

As a socialist with facist tendencies I believe voting should be made mandatory.

Lets have a referendum to decide :eye:

Labour's ability to fuck up in it's most dedicated heartland when campaigning against TWO government is quite an achievement.

The message seemed all wrong and Gray, along with Miliband, totally unable to inspire anyone...says so much that those leftwing liberals went to SNP rather than return to Labour.

Labour really seemed to think that Labour voters hating the government would spill over into everyone else voting Labour, without even addressing why so many people have deserted them since 1997...

I don't know about anywhere else, but I know that in Scotland at least Labour and Conservatives both ran a ridiculously negative campaign. They used up even more time than usual just bashing each other and saying very little about their politics. And Gray is the most boring man possibly ever :?

Exactly right for Scotland. The SNP campaigned on hope, Labour on fear.

Giving reasons not to vote for the other guy will only ever speak to people who will vote for you anyway. Labour's Scotland vote stayed the same, while the SNP went out of their way to attract voters instead.

It just goes to show though that the 'people' just weren't that bothered about AV ! It was just a policy that the lib dems forced on the coalition as part of the terms of their signing up... how many people do you know are bothered about electoral reform?? not many I bet ! people are worried about unemployment/employment, the NHS, government cut backs, immigration etc.. the same old same old.... most people don't give a monkey's about the bloody voting system. What pisses me off is that vince cable et al then get all arsey when the vote doesn't go their way, how bloody patronising, like we stupid people just don't understand and are soooo easily swayed by the Tories and their NO campaign.. give us a bit of credit vince, most people don't give a fuck about AV or your stupid party... and that was definitely reflected in the lib dem vote so bollocks to them!! phew.. sorry about that, i'll get down from my high horse now... didn't realise i was so worked up about that one!! and on a final note Ed Miliband is a complete wanker...sorry, calmed down now

I totally agree with the passion behind what you are saying and on what are the major issues we face as a country.

What annoys is people not bothering to vote, no matter what the issue or election. We are damn lucky to have the opportunity to vote and people campaigned for decades for that right. Whilst there are more important issues, when we see people today dieing for that right (just like people in our own country did) I just think we have so little excuse when we don't. We have BNP MEPs because enough people did not go out and vote.

We had council elections that day to and yet people still didn't bother voting. When are councils are facing major decisions regarding public services, people not bothering to vote or engage with the decisions they will soon be complaining about just gets me on my own high horse.

I am an evangilist for Democracy :) :) :) and this is my sacred text:

Also, Labour had an AV referendum in their 2010 manifesto, offered the LDs AV without a referendum as well as a referendum on PR following the result - so to some degree, the past and current Labour leadership did care about it :) Plus 2010 pollings show we would have a Lab/Lib coalition now if we had AV then...

I could talk about the times Labour government MPs voted through AV to have it blocked by a Tory dominated Lords but my posts tend to make people contemplate suicide enough already...

A chance for change was there - 42% could be bothered to register an opinion - the vast majority of which did not want change - that's democracy in action...

Rock on chick, get worked up all you like. It's called righteous anger pal. The voting system is flawed but what is more of a worry is that people don't think there is anyone to vote for. Why should people exercise their hard won right when everyone on the ballot paper is a principle-less, in it for themselves tosser. And Hot Charity, the thing about Tony Benn is that he is an evangelist for democracy but then he's a socialist, he has ideas, he has an ideology. If Labour were a party of Tony Benns, we wouldn't even be having this conversation because the world would be a better place.

And for the record, I don't think a Lib/Lab coalition would've been a lot better. Think Clegg and crew have shown their true colours over all this and it's a very dark shade of shite. x

I do understand where you're coming from Hot Charity, but like Helen said, one of the problems at the moment is that people just don't feel like there is anyone worth voting for! Until the last election I've voted Labour all my life, from Michael Foot onwards... yes, I am THAT OLD !! the last time I got really excited about politics was in 97 when Tony Blair got in.. and the rest is history my friend... talk about totally disillusioned... and as for Tony Benn, he is one of the best of the best old school politicians... and sadly they just don't make' em like him anymore. And I would like to reassure you that your posts do not want to make me contemplate suicide.... so rock on! :)
