(Apologies if this has already been the subject of a thread)

Just watched this again on Film 4. An incredibly well made and well written film made on a budget - it blows the Hollywood shite out of the water IMO.

Just one question - where is the big derelict house at the end of the film?

It is Riber Castle, Matlock. The finale takes place in the abandoned zoo which used to be in the castle grounds until it shut in 2000. My family are from Matlock so I know it well.

Riber Castle is situated in the hamlet of Riber on a hill overlooking Matlock, Derbyshire. It was built by John Smedley in 1862 as his private home, but he died before its completion. His wife lived in it until her death.

It is built of gritstone from a local quarry (Derbyshire is well-known for its quarrying) which was pulled up the 200 metre high hill by a series of pulleys.

After the death of Smedley's wife, the castle became a boys school until this became financially unsustainable in the 1930s. With the coming of WWII the Ministry of Defence used the site for storage. The MoD left following the war and the castle remained unused until the 1960s.

From the 1960s to September 2000 it was home to a wildlife park, to British and European Fauna. Riber Castle Wildlife Park or "Riber Zoo", as it was known, was eventually sold by the owner, but they were unable to sell it as a going concern, and so the park eventually closed. The park was criticised heavily for the treatment of the animals kept there, and the closure was not without controversy.

Activists also released several Lynx from Riber zoo which escaped into the wild, sightings of the animals lead to locals coining the nickname "The beast of Lumsdale".

It is currently in disrepair, although there are plans to turn the shell into apartments which received planning consent on 15 March 2006. At this time there are no floors or roof to the castle building, and the remnants of the zoo are clear, with footpaths, enclosures and buildings still present. Access to the site is restricted, access is predominately though damaged perimeter fences.

The castle, and the town of Matlock featured strongly in the Shane Meadows film Dead Mans Shoes.

bytheway you aren't officially allowed to trespass on the site but you can get through a gap in the perimeter fence and go explore....just don't go on your own :pale: :pale: :pale: :pale:

 all right big man, you aren't officially allowed to go onto the site but you aren't that likely to be done for trespassing either, that better for you?

I don't think Paddy's done a duff film or performance. I remember first seeing him in a film called 'Last Resort' then there was the short Chris Morris film, 'My Wrongs...'

What was the film he did where he played an odd loner on this council estate...and tries to get a girlfriend...bullies a boy...Damn, it escapes me now but if anyone can think of it and then you can all watch it, you're in for a treat.

I've been all over for a copy the last few weeks and none of the biggies or my local blockbuster has one. Apparently it's due for a big DVD re-release.

,.......can anyone lend us a copy?? :?
