Has any one else seen this? It's a bizarre road movie from Finland with a rockibilly slant. It was on BBC 2 a few years ago. Mark Kermode raved about it.

I loved the dynamics of the caffine attacke and the vodka addict in a car together, following Valto, locking his mum in a cupboard for about a week and nicking her pension to stock up on coffee.

Here's a review.

Haven't seen that for years - I think I've got it on an old VHS at the back of the cupboard somewhere. It's an Aki Kaurismaki isn't it? He's made some great films. I take it you've seen Leningrad Cowboys Go America?

I haven't seen that one but I downloaded the Leningrad Cowboys version of 'Happy Together' a few years ago.

I've seen tons of world cinema stuff although I don't think I'm familiar with other Aki Kaurismaki films (not that I know of anyway).

I have this on tape somewhere as well. I remember it being quite bonkers but touching. I like the close up of Valto's fist closing when he demands coffee and his mother just says 'Tomorrow Valto'. Then he locks her in the cupboard and only lets her out at the end.

Here is that very scene but I think it's in Finnish or something.

And here's some Leningrad Cowboys for those who haven't heard or seen them. If you follow other links you'll see them perform this and others live with the red army choir. It's different.

Here's another - quite typically Kaurismäkian - clip of that "Tatjana" film...

That is a class, very bizarre film ... great fun. Late 1980s I think?

Yep - it's v good, I'm sure others have mentioned it on here before. Haven't seen Man Without a PAst yet, but have seen quite a few of his others.

Let's face it he made I Hired a Contract Killer. A film with Margi Clarke in that isn't shite, that alone takes some sort of genius.
