Respect Yourself - The Stax Story
Part of Stax Records Night.

The story is about Stax Records whose hits include Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay, Soul Man, If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Wanna Be Right), Knock On Wood and Respect.

A white brother and sister established a recording studio in a black Memphis neighbourhood in the 1960s and their open-door policy created an interracial house band - Booker T and the MGs - who made hits for whomever came through those doors.

Those Stax stars included Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, The Dramatics, Albert King, Luther Ingram, Rufus Thomas and Jesse Jackson. The legacy has never been stronger and Stax songs have been recorded by scores of artists - Aretha Franklin, Neil Young, Wu Tang Clan, Michael Bolton and almost every artist wanting to express their soul.

Respect Yourself includes never before seen footage, including home movies by the Stax artists, outtakes from WattStax, lost performances by Otis Redding, Booker T and the MGs, Isaac Hayes and others.

Interviews include all the key players plus Jesse Jackson, Elvis Costello, Bono, Chuck D, Peter Townsend, Dan Akroyd and Justin Timberlake. [S]

Really interesting documentary and, of course, some fantastic music. It is worth paying the licence fee to see gems like this (in amongst the dross!) :D

I dozed and woke up briefly to the sight of Rufus Thomas in shocking pink shorts.....but nodded again and woke to the Mar Keys in Norway and watched the rest of a stunning performance. Sam and Dave's dance routines were fantastic and what a band the MGs were. Steve Cropper the epitome of cool economy and Duck Dunn with his poppy eyes and frazzled hair, also just appreciated last night the majesty of Al Jackson's drumming

I mentioned this to my Hubby this morning and he found it on the i-player tonight and we watched it together. :) I learned a lot, and let him tease me about my lack of knowledge. I don't know who was from Motown or who sang what, I will learn one day.

I found it fascinating, and what great music.

fantastic programme, I thought it was interesting that when they set up the label it was to be a country label as that was the stuff they were into, but they kind of adapted to the area's musical taste's , I would say they did a pretty good job of it.
