While I'm at it, a little video from one of my favourite live bands at the moment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlYrOBvt9IQ

This is possibly my favourite clip on the entire website:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=U7STSGw7OPU

It's just a run down of the league tables from 1990 but Bruce Hornsby, Bob Wilson and Bury being above Bolton gets me all dewy-eyed.

Blimey, that's a can of worms that I didn't want opening. Billie Holiday has a knack of making me cry and I followed that youtube thread for too long. Such a voice, such a life, such a tragedy.

I'm with you on that, lutherplayed. Skipped through Rice&Hannigan and went straight to lady day ... sends shivers ... incredible. 'strange fruit' is the one that always gets me crying.

I'm sorry, I can't watch or listen to Strange Fruit without breaking down. Such an evocative song, it sends shivers through me.

She has an amazing voice, it's almost as though she embodies the pain of generations ... she is unique .... the only other singer who comes close for me is nina simone, though i think simone has more power and suppressed anger in her vocals whereas holiday's is of vulnerability and brokenness. If any of that makes sense. :?

It certainly makes sense. My take on it is that Billie had to accept the shit she was forced to feed on every day at that point in time while Nina had a little more freedom to express what she really felt without being pilloried. Both fantastic singers and human beings but possibly a million miles apart. Just my opinion, and probably worth nothing in the inebriated state i'm in. :BEEEER
