Looking forward to that - hopefully there'll be an exploration of the Effie Gray/Ruskin/Millais shenanigans.

It's a three-parter, this one examines the begining of the movement but I'm sure they will not miss out on the love lives, they always do Rossetti and Siddall and the exhumation.

I'm sure I've got some older TV stuff about them, must do some digging out of old video tapes and transfer to DVD.

Most definitely (repeated the next day as well, just in case we forget, or the recorders fail).

Burne-Jones Perseus cycle from the Stuutgart museum are up at Birmingham at the moment, I may just make the effort to pop up and see them.

Waterhouse at the Royal Academy soon as well (as that's about 15 minutes from the office I maybe visiting regularly during it's run, as I did when Llopyd-Weber's Pre-raph collection was there).

That sounds really interesting as i love the Pre-Raphaelites, especially Millais, Bourne Jones and John William Waterhouse. I've got several prints [obviously not original] in my house. I'm not so keen on Rossetti though, but i quite like his sister[christina] poetry.

Thanks for the heads up on this. :)

I hadn't actually noticed in the listings that this was going to be on.

I shall be checking these out.

Next up is Desperate Romantics on BBC2 from 21 July, just seen the ad using Bowie's Heroes and several mean, moody looking men. Aidan Turner is Rossetti, Rafe Spall Holman-Hunt, and Amy Manson Lizzie Siddal.

And this one will more than likely explore the Ruskin/Effie/Millais story.

And I gather Ken Russells' programme about them, Dante's Inferno, should be ought on DVD soon.

Waterhouse is not a true Pre-Raphaelite, but is being billed as a Modern one in the current exhibition.

Took a while to find an in line version of this picture that captured the stunning colours properly. This is still not quite right, but better than the others I found.

"Desperate Romantics" is good fun! I'm really enjoying it, historical liberties and all.

No Deverell, no sign of William Michael, Fred Walters - who he!

But so far so good.

Radio Times reviewer described 'Desperate Romantics' as ''The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood presented as Take That'' :*:

I like how it's not been treated so seriously - the shenanigans that went on amongst the Pre-Raphs are legendary. I particularly like this quote from a blog I found about the "problem" that Ruskin had with Effie Gray - how can there not be humour in something like this?

"This almost total lack of the pubic thatch in art has had sorry repercussions. On his wedding night, Ruskin, a connoisseur of fine art who had spent many years studying the Great Masters, was frightened out of his wits by his new wife. Sadly Effie Gray had neglected to shave off her pubic hair - in line with classical statuary - and the sight of her hairy vulva so repulsed Ruskin that he left the marital bed never to return.

"It may be thought strange that I could abstain from a woman who to most people was so attractive. But though her face was beautiful, her person was not formed to excite passion. On the contrary, there were certain circumstances in her person which completely checked it." Ruskin speaking to his lawyer.

Effie was later to marry John Everett Millais, who was clearly not put off by hirsute pudenda as they has eight children. " :D

I loved it, doesn't really matter whether it's accurate or not, it's really entertaining.

I have one very very dim question. I heard the term Pre Raphaelite used in the first episode. How come they knew??????? :?
