I didn't mean to buy a book today, but I wandered into Ottakar's at lunchtime and this caught my eye:

It's a book I'd been meaning to read for a long time -- partly because I like the other things I've read by Swift, and partly because I was intrigued by the title. But the main reason I picked it up today (shallow though it is) was the cool cover design. Penguin has done a whole series of these:

(St Augustine is the only one I've read. )

I can't find a picture of it, but A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. Cover notes sounded good, and I was entertained for a while. The dates, figures, facts, quantities, distances etc then totally did my head in and it became too hard work to bother with. So I threw it.

All the others above sound very posh and interesting for clever arty types, so I'm with Dave, er Razzle  (well ok EuroBoys)

Exit stage left persued by people with more culture than me

I was going to get that one, some of them are interesting in that series...already have the ones on The Smiths, Love (nonsense but novel!) and Dusty Springfield.

That Vernon God Little book is amazing.

And I've been wanting to read The Da Vinci Code for ages. Is it any good?

"Deep In a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker" by James Gavin

Jeeezus, what a ride. I've been a huge fan since discovering Chet in '95... The Bruce Weber film "Let's Get Lost" was a romantic introduction to his sordid, sad story. Gavin is a little heavy handed, but he definately did his homework on this one.

I spent yesterday reading:

It was really interesting -- I learned a lot. Great pictures, too.

M,y son has got, and has read, that book and I was rather interested....not least because it's about someone with Aspergers Syndrome and the kids I've taught, over the years, who have had it have been some of the most fascinating people I've ever met.
