Saw this in the Art gallery in York a couple of weeks back - it was over fifty quid. Got back home and found it on EBay - bought it for £3.95...

Went to see Sunset Song last night, former pink lady. Very beautifully shot but fell far short of the majesty of the book. Peter Mullan was brilliant as the father, brooding and violent, and the scenery is stunning. Did you read the book in the end? xxx

I was specifically told to wait to buy this because it might appear under the Christmas tree. This was a lot to ask because everyone knows how all in a sweat I've been to get my hands on it. So much so that I've been sneaking clandestine reads here and there at bookshops since it came out. I couldn't help it. I mean, technically I could have, I just didn't want to. Does this violate the terms of the contract? I don't think it does. But then, I'm really good at rationalizing shit. I'm going to hell, aren't I. :-)

No Helen I haven't read it yet. I wanted to let the film drift out if my memory a bit before I started reading. I'm going to my son's in the US for Christmas so hoping to start reading it on the journey out - I downloaded the whole trilogy. Have you read the other two books?

I loved the film which was, as you say, beautifully shot, I wasn't sure about Agnyss Deyn's performance but the fantastic Peter Mullan is so talented (but ever so slightly scary!) I've loved him since I saw him years ago in My Name is Joe. Hoping to see his new film Hector.

Hello lovely. Yes, I have read the three. Sunset Song is the best, although the other two are also good because you want to see how her life progresses.

There is a prelude to Sunset Song, where he goes on about prehistory quite a bit. I'd skip that bit until you've finished it as it's a bit hard going. And the dialect thing is difficult but worth sticking with it as it is a beautiful, beautiful thing. A long flight would be a great place to start as I'm sure it would make the journey fly by.

And totally agree about Peter Mullan. He's soooo good. And his character is such a bastard – if the film were more like the book, I think it would've suited him as Grassic Gibbon spends a lot of time developing the father character.

My disappointment of the film was Chris, but I don't know whether that was the actress. Would be interested in what you think after you've read it.

I've got the complete Just William collection in Spanish, and I'm trying to buy all the books in English, too. I set out to collect the red paperbacks Macmillan published in the 90s with cover illustrations by Thomas Henry, but they seem to be very elusive. I bought this old hardback because it contains two stories that were omitted in the paperbacks (they seem to be considered offensive nowadays).

Best children books I've ever read.
