Ok, advice time. My six year old son has become a Star Wars freak, mostly due to the George Lucas cartoon thingy on telly. He wants to watch all the films (bit dubious myself as some of them are too violent I reckon). Anyway, blokey wants to buy them all on DVD and watch them with the kids. But in what order? In chronological order or in the order they were made? I'd prefer the later because at least he'd be a bit older when they start chopping limbs off and burning people in lava...

In the order they were released.................and then stop after three !!

When they went back and did the 'first' three, they went all serious and completely forgot about what had made the original trio such great films.....Action and Adventure with a healthy dose of comedy and CGI used minimally.

Dunno if your six year old will understand that though. May the force be with you.......Image

my kids love it,i do too if the truth were told.....the originals are the best, they work because they were modelled......in my opinion on the old black and white Flash Gordon films even to the point of the"fade outs"of scenes that disappear into a fade dot in the centre of the screen, they had humour and none of the finger wagging morality of the later films.....that said the whole story is boss....at six years old i don't think they'd mind, mine watched the originals first then the newer one's after.........at crimbo they got the full six film DVD from a relative and watched them all in order....it makes no odds really....they're good entertainment.....the newer one's are more savage though

I saw Star Wars in 77 just after my 21st birthday - make 'em wait a bit - that Chewie scared the shit out of me

Episodes IV to VI first. If you do it in chronological order you risk boring them senseless and making them hate Star Wars. No child's imagination deserves that. Star Wars has to start with wanting to grow up to be Luke Skywalker.

yeah start with IV-VI- better movies and less violent if you're worried about that - will also make the prequel films more interesting- and since they arent that interesting to begin with... its an improvement

Good advice peeps. Will do the first three first, if you see what I mean. The boy keeps going off to his room, shutting the door, and I can hear him fighting tusken raiders and talking about the dark side. Cute. Loved Flash Gordon when I was a kid – was always a disappointment to me that technology didn't give us half the stuff they had in programmes like that or Star Trek. Still waiting for a jet pack to take me to Sainsbury's... x

Yeah you really have to watch them 4-6, then 1-3. The first time. Having said that I'm still explaining to my young brother how the new ones are set before the old ones, so get used to that. As for the violence, any kid who has set foot in our house over the last 15 years has ended up watching star wars, no matter how young they are and there's never been a problem.

Definitely in the order they were released I think. Although the most violent/scary one is Empire Strikes Back.

I've thought about it again. Watch them 1 through 6, if you and the hubby have seen them already. Kids don't care about spoilers, and it'll save you months of explaining how 1 is 4 and vice versa. If it were anyone over the age of about 9 watching for the first time then id say 4-6 then 1-3.

Yeah, the explaining bit is quite hard. The wee one just doesn't get the Darth Vader, Anekin, Luke thing. He doesn't get most things bless him. He thinks me and his dad were at school together and keeps asking me what his dad was like when he was six. And I have to say, I don't know son, I didn't know him then, you'll have to ask Granny. And he looks at me, puzzled, cos I'm sure deep down he doesn't really understand that I'm not his dad's mum! So the whole Star Wars fraternal fuck up, well I don't think that will wash! xxx
