I have some great Hipstamatic pics we took at the funfair in Southend last year. Would post them up if I wasn't so technically illiterate. Where do you stick them? So to speak...

You can make a free tumblr blog pretty easily - www.tumblr.com fwiw my tumblr blog is at http://www.simonkemp.tumblr.com You can upload directly from your phone which is pretty cool. When you look back over your pics after a year or two it's a great visual diary.

Apologies in advance to snapper... i think this is the sort of thing that REAL photographers probably despise right now. But I hope to have not let the stupidly forgiving media take over and that there is some sort of photographic eye remaining.

*Not at all*. I loathe gear snobbery. People shot great photos decades ago, that still stand up today, on very rudimentary cameras. And many 'pros' take shit pictures on hi spec cameras. I don't care what camera a photo is shot on, it's where, when, and what the person points the thing at that matters above all else. It's the creativity that wins out every time.

For what it's worth I've just looked through the whole book and I liked every single picture. I think the Hipstamatic effect is really overused nowadays and a lot of people just crank the effect on to make a badly composed, ill thought out picture look atmospheric. And that's ok, people enjoy it. But I think your pictures would still look good without it - because you've got the eye for it and that's what matters, and I think the effects suit the way you've taken the pics. I really like the desaturated setting that's on the pic of the street musicians actually. My favourite shot is the one of the 3 dogs, I think Elliott Erwitt would've been pleased with that.

In fact I've been toying with getting an iphone so I can take pics easier when I'm out & about. A technical query - does the camera take the pic without the effect and then you choose which one to apply after or do you have to shoot it on a specific setting?

But great stuff. Carry on :)

OK, have done the thing. http://erniemum.tumblr.com

Not that I have put anything on it. Apart from a picture of Rod Stewart in a mankini showing his pubes.

But I'll work on it.

With Hipstamatic you choose a "lens" and "film" combination before taking the shot and it then does what it has to. The effect of the different "lenses" and "films" can, in part be guessed, but there's often a bit of randomness in the outcome, all the same.

There are plenty of iPhone apps that let you edit a "clean" photo - Snapseed is a really good one, but there are loads of others - Photo Wizard, Camera Bag, to name just a couple.

wow! looks like we've found a rich vein of creativity running through the Hawley board!

Loving your Galleries ESPFPS and Simon, going to have a proper look through tomorrow. Simon- wild stab in the dark but i guess your favourite film on the hipsta is float?

And snapper, very very kind words indeed, which mean a great deal to me, so pleased you like the book.

I'd recommend the iphone, and hipstamatic. yes it can get 'gratuitous' in some hands, but i reckon in your hands it would be superb. The iphone 4s by the way has a much better camera (8 megapixels and better optics and pixel depth) than than the standard 4 (5 mega pixels). but even the standard i4 gives a good printable' 10Mb result. these are printing at 10 x 10 inches with no issues at all, could prob go bigger.

as efsb said the hipstamatic gives a range of virtual films and lenses, that you soon get used to selecting- pretty much in the same way you'd select your films traditionally, when you just have a good idea how something will turn out. I probably use about 2-3 lenses and a lot of the films. For example the pics you like of the dogs and the street band are done on one of a load of b/w films, this one is called 'black keys' and retains just a little bit of desautrated colour.

All the pics in the book are pretty much exactly as they come out with very little retouching. It may feel a bit gimmicky at first and not, its not a 'proper' camera really and i think as you do handle the real deal a lot you may find it a bit meh.... but to be honest with your approach i dont think you'd regret having it one bit

was talking to another 'proper photographer' he's not seen these yet but was really having a go at the idea of shooting on a phone, he's got all the kit... but funnily enough, is a completely shite photographer.

If anything i'd say the weakest thing about the iphone is low light shots. a bit pants for gigs and suchlike. I reckon the 4s will improve this.

And thanks for the tip to do these at blurb, it was the only one of these book places that allowed me to lay out the book independently of some limiting online tool. I did another at snapfish which was good quality too though.

and re me being an 'ex photographer', i was a professional and specialised in design photography and experimental darkroom techniques as well as reportage stuff. Even had my own exhibition once! After a while, when photoshop started, the demand was waning, so i started to get into that side of things, so i ended up going back into graphic design (which i still do now). I put the camera down maybe 10 years ago and never picked it up again.

So the whole advent of digital photography went on without me till now.

looking forward to seeing more results.

thanks again for the warm reception to the pics.

I've amended the link in Helen's post so it should now work.

Thank you, Denise.

And managed to have a good look through your pics, Widnesboy, and they are lovely. Much better taste than Rod's man garden, although, despite everything, I still do have a bit of a crush on him. Bit ashamed but there you go.

Have located by Hips – will bung them on when I can kick the kids off the computer. x
