not sure if this belongs in culture corner... but... I've just done a book of some of the pics i've taken with my phone this year.... I'm actually an 'ex-photographer' who put the camera down long too long ago, and earlier this year started taking pics using the phone, and liked the results. Less than a year later i've enough to gather together in one place, and have put a book together on blurb. you should be able to see it here http://tinyurl.com/cgp8q36 I'm not asking anyone to buy it or anything, (the kids dont need christmas presents after all... sniff), but would love to see what people think of it. The opinions of you lot actually mean something to me. Apologies in advance to snapper... i think this is the sort of thing that REAL photographers probably despise right now. But I hope to have not let the stupidly forgiving media take over and that there is some sort of photographic eye remaining. i'm thinking of taking up the camera again properly at some point, so looking at this as a starting point. comments and criticism welcome! |

Love it - I don't know what a "real" photographer looks like, but they should like these images - I like the mix of abstraction, reportage and eye for light and shape. Hipstamatic throws in a random element which you have to try and control, so how's that different from using a Diana or other toy camera? Who cares that they were done on your phone? The best camera is the one that you have with you. You should be proud of these. |

Hey it's great what you are doing... I don't go anywhere without taking my little instant camera,I like taking snaps...just walking to work I'll see something....I converted half of my garage into a darkroom in the summer...got a load of black out fabric from east germany...& purchased an enlarger etc etc from some old boy who was having a clear out.....I am determined to get my head around depth of field & how a camera actually 'works'...I don't mind saying camera's fascinate me...catching a moment that will never ever come back....brilliant. Does your book come in paper format..? |

I was going to say that - or something like it - he says going to look up reportage. For your next assignment go to Barcelona and take some bad photos

Thanks for the positive comments! EFSB, great comments indeed. I actually though like to try to remove the 'randomness' of what Hipstamatic does and try and carefully select the effects to suit. This as a 'media' is very forgiving, and i see lot of indifferent pics from it that are made interesting by virtue of the media rather than the observation. sounds like you use it yourself though- you got any results you could share? beeshette, yes the book can be ordered through that link, but to be honest its a bit expensive at about £40 for a hardback book though 118 pages! i'm not really doing this to sell (but would be nice!). I'm a self employed designer, so I'm mainly getting books printed as giveaways/promo items for clients. Good luck with your pics and darkroom. This is sort of why i fell by the wayside in photgraphy, i was a 'traditional' professional film photographer and when taking shots it would be with how i was going to print it, what the film was doing in mind, and i used to specialise in experimental darkroom techniques. before long i had to start doing the techniques digitally, and i ended up falling back into the digital/graphics side of things and completely lost the behind the camera side. I've got a bag of Nikon F3's gathering dust somehwere... I never knew i'd get that feeling back from shooting pics on a phone... Depth of field is the most lovely part of photography, you only need to look at the stuff that snapper does to know that knowing where to focus and isolate is the difference between a decent shot and a great one- i find myself looking more at the out of focus backgrounds that the subject sometimes. Get out those long lenses and learn how to master it! I also used to teach photography a bit and have some exercises for learning to use depth of field.... Again, you have any shots you've done that you can share? and cheers Ploppy, i got LOADS of pics in Barca, could have done a book of just them! Thanks for liking the images, makes it worthwhile to share. |

This is brilliant, I love the pic of the musicians with the hair flying and the way the veins stand up on the arm of the guy on the left - amazing that you got these on your phone! The best camera and most expensive lens is no good behind the wrong eye. Simple as that. And I love the story telling (can't spell reportage  ) element too.

I know what you mean about Hipstamatic in terms of choosing effects - for me it's a bit random though, because I don't pay too much attention to what "film" or "lens" is loaded and only play around if there's time to re-take the shot - here's some that I've done with it -

Good stuff. I'm sad enough to be able to tell you all the film/lens combos you've used there. and thanks Maggie. i go a lot of shots of those street musicians (a reggae band playing in parc guell in Barca )on both hipsta and proper camera. was a bit spoilt for choice as the singer with the dreads was so animated and visually expressive. so by being selective a lot of storytelling gets left out. i'll see if i can post another couple of images of them later. though i think putting the camera 'behind' the eye sounds a bit painful. |

Brilliant pictures btw Phil, I really enjoyed looking at those. I've been a Hipstamatic fan for a while (I have a tumblr blog where I upload them all). Your compositions are great, clearly you have a great eye. I'm just wondering why you are an 'ex photographer'?

I have some great Hipstamatic pics we took at the funfair in Southend last year. Would post them up if I wasn't so technically illiterate. Where do you stick them? So to speak... |
