Can we have a thread just for radio? Can I say, I think I am regressing, abandoning TV and all its various incarnations, in favour of listening to the radio.

The BBC has just developed a radio player for the i-Pod, so you can listen to the digital channels like 6Radio. And it means I can listen and listen again to people like Robert Elms, who despite the fact that people think he's a ponce, interviews and introduces the music of some great people – first heard H on his show, Gregory Porter, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, all of whom have become stalwarts of my listening pleasure. And this last week alone he's had Tracey Thorn, Jools Holland, Kool from Kool and the Gang, Slim Chance and Rod Stewart! Which may sound middle of the road but it was fascinating stuff and confirmed that yes, I do still have a massive crush on Rod the Mod, after all these years!!

I am also becoming a Radio 4 news fiend, except for when it sounds like vicars' wives half hour, you know, programmes about preserving and farming and the like. Have even branched out to indie stuff on 6Radio, admittedly I have to switch it over ever now and again and play myself something decent, but I'm making an attempt to broaden my mind.

Anyway, anyone got any tips for anything good that I might have missed, that I could go down the shed and listen to? My tip this week would be Jazzie B, Friday night, BBC London, 8pm. Fools my body into thinking I'm going out out. x

Helen, you can start whatever thread you like so long as you promise NEVER to assault our senses with 'that' particular photo of 'Rod'. EVER !

In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

It must've had a profound effect on you that picture. I did say out loud at work the other day that there was a certain point in time where Rod was the coolest and most beautiful man to walk the earth and the boy sitting opposite looked at me with what I can only describe as a mixture of revulsion and extreme pity. And I didn't even show him the mankini or joyously bursting man garden.

Will stick to the subject, promise. x

I know Eoin has seen these. He's probably re-examining his wardrobe choices as we speak...x

If i find myself in the kitchen on a Saturday night i always have Craig Charles on while i'm cooking. Funk does nothing for me but the Soul more than makes up for it.

Oh my god, those 'Rod' pictures are most disturbing. The one on the left needed to stay in his own private collection. The one on the right......okay, Helen......maybe. But I do respect him for his obvious passion for his team. I look like that most Saturdays these days but they are not tears of pride and joy.

Back to radio. I like Jarvis. I like radio 4 on Saturday mornings too with Saturday live. Big confession time now. If I am doing something boring like cleaning I listen to Smooth radio 70s. I know. All street cred gone. There is some toe curling crap on there but some good 70s soul too. Honest.

oh no ... put it away, Rod ... that's just put me right off me dinner :?

I quite often listen to Cerys Matthews on 6 music on a Sunday morning - she plays a really wide range of stuff and has some interesting guests and I sometimes catch the Bob Harris late night Sat/Sunday show on Radio 2 if I haven't fallen asleep on the sofa

Some good tips there...

We could do a swap Craig, I could volunteer to further your funkster education and you could try and interest me in Americana. I am worried that your disconnection to the funk could have grave consequences in later life, not to mention your ability to properly function in the kitchen.

Do you not even wiggle your monkey butt to:

And the Rod thing, I have tried, it is a bit like not being able to stop yourself eating chocolate, or having a sneaky fag, or laying off the gin. Sad really – if you ever play that game with your friends (blokes probably don't) where you pick five people who, if you fell over them in the street, would make you a bit lechy and inappropriate in the behaviour department – well, my five are all like that, quite sad and generally unpleasant to most people. And that's if they're even still alive, cos I have had to revise them a couple of times due to the march of time.

I fear that may happen to you Craig, if your funk disconnection continues. Act now, before it's too late...x

That would be a good thread! Maybe call it 'Given the chance, I would'. You start Helen, I can't wait to hear your five!

I think men do play that game only slightly differently. From listening to two blokes standing at the bar once it was a case of shag any woman who came in but for some you needed to be more pissed than others.E.g. 'that one would be half a shandy' whereas some other poor girl would be '15 pints and several whiskey chasers'. At least it went something like that.
