Hi Folks,
I like a lot of you I'm sure,am getting pretty browned off at the media's total re-writting of Margaret Thatcher's years as Prime Minister,i make no comment about her personally and i am sure her family are finding this all very stressful and i hate the idea of people suffering........BUT I am allowed,as this is still...i hope.......a democracy where you can air your views freely,I have been away on holiday for the last week and Monday it was announced that Mrs Thatcher had died, after that time thoughts of My Dad and his comrades in the Steel works have been looming large in my mind.......I admired them all so very much for standing up for what they believed in they were and still are my heroes.....and let it be known from one who's young eyes watched it all first hand that they weren't just beaten they were brutalised, and that was just a rehearsal for what was to come with the miners.........the suffering of the families was horrendous,i know all to well..we were one of them........all this has had no mention at all.......its all how wonderful she was..i don't share that view point at all as i was on the receiving end of her vicious policies and her use of our Police force as an army that were deployed to ensure her ideas were carried out to the letter.........how can you airbrush that?......although i concede i have disengaged with it all as of Friday as it was truly doing my head in so maybe i have missed any true balanced media coverage since then.....it is verging on lies the stuff i have heard.......The repulsive sight of the tories using her death to bash anyone who utters another view point is truly sickening to me.......and saying that anyone who disagrees is being disrespectful............surely the very act of using her passing as a bludgeon to bash the heads in of any dissenters is an act of disrespect??.......they think that if they shout loudest they will alter half a nations memories......once this is all over history will have its say and i for one want no part in this total crock of s**t version of it.....the truth as they say...will out..........lets see how the media are when any other figures of the time pass on.......say.....er.....Arthur Scargill for example........i wonder if they'll say"you can't be disrespectful about the dead"then......i can see the headlines now..........!!!!....My wife made the very relevant point too that if Thatcher tried to get into Oxford now,as a grocers daughter from Grantham with the situation as it is these days, she would stand no chance whatsoever.......

So,regarding the headline of this post,i wanted to pass on a message i got that i totally agree with from my mate Martin Wallace a filmmaker regarding the ding-dong tune in the charts,i will type it out verbatim so there's no editing from me........

"I downloaded ding-dong in order to protest at the rose tinted, airbrushed version of Thatcher that the establishment is painting. Now the BBC are trying to censor the voice of dissent.Don't give the Tories the chance to kick the working classes even harder. Please download DingDong this week and don't let a new generation be fooled into thinking that brutal, compassionless leadership is a good thing. Please download it,spread the word"
MW

I agree, its not about being childish or mocking anymore they are trying to censor it and not allow ANY other view point but their own to come across i think thats despicable, this censorship will affect history so that people in the future will look back and think this was some kind of golden era which it most certainly wasn't for most folks......it was if you were working in the city or a banker or a business man investing abroad but not if you were an ordinary person trying to get through your life decently working hard and maybe raising a family under her yoke and the bloody poll tax,all her thinking ushered in the shit we're in now, rampant greed and selfishness running riot through our daily lives,we turned from a proud nation of producers into nation of consumers under her stewardship and for that alone i will never forgive her and her party.......look at downloading that song as a vote of protest if you agree with me,and if you don't your obviously able to do so..........this is after all...........a free country...???????

best wishes and kind regards

Richard ..>

So, BBC Radio 1 played The Notsensibles' "I'm In Love With Margaret Thatcher" in full. No "news item", no "5 second excerpt". Interesting, eh?

Fuck the chart nonsense, PD. The BBC has always been biased – don't even report strikes by their own staff with any honesty.

Explained it to my sons and they got it, with the help of this, which is funny but at the same time great.

And Hawley, did you do all that on your phone? Righteous rant on a Nokia? The only way I manage to pump out any verbage is because I do 70wpm on a keyboard and about two on my phone. How the fuck do you do it without predictive text changing it to I loved Thatcher, especially her chunky thighs or some such. Flying fingers or major textage, as my son would say...x

I totally agree. The media's ridiculously biased towards her and maybe i was naive but i didn't expect that total blanket agreement. It is really scary stuff. I read an Independent article about the protests trying to act like their heart wasn't really in it and people are reacting at her death just because they feel they should. I'm not old enough to remember her policies properly, but my dad is, and hates her, and my grandad would never allow her on the TV, saying 'Turn that bitch off!' Most people i know never had a good word for her, and you're right, Richard, it will affect how future generations think of her and how she goes down in history. evil:

Not sure where to put this post as Thatcher is appearing in a number of threads. I'll do it here. I can't celebrate an old lady's death but I can say, even though she has died and some might deem it disrespectful, that I loathed everything she stood for and everything she did. Whether she is dead or alive my views remain the same.
I am actually quite surprised and pleased by the fact that people are speaking out. The Bishop of Grantham spoke of his concern about the funeral and said if you were a miner or family of a miner in South Yorkshire who suffered hardship and despair and never recovered then this will be too much to take. I come from a mining background. Many of my uncles worked down the pit, as did my father in law. I saw the devastation and the way communities were destroyed. Society has changed. Greed, corrupted values, self interest, me, me me. It started with Thatcher and unfortunately continued with Blair. Using the police as her army is a good phrase and spot on. That's exactly what she did.
I am avoiding the news and the papers and I won't be watching any aspect of the funeral nor will I read about it. Her family, quite rightly, will mourn her but I do not want to be any part of it. The notion she died a lonely old lady is bollocks. She died in luxury. Her children were abroad but so are many other old people's children. She didn't die of hypothermia because she couldn't afford to heat her council flat.
People say she was strong. I disagree. She was a tyrant and a bully. She wouldn't listen to other people's views. That is not strong. Strength is admitting you are wrong; taking account of others' views; compassion. People say she stuck to her convictions. So did Hitler. It doesn't make them worthy.
Anyway - I have had my say. Once all the 'respect' stuff is over, people will come out of the woodwork and will tell the truth. History will not be re-written. I am sure of it.

Just realised this was meant to have an emoticon, not the word 'evil', although if the cap fits...

I agree Lou,comparing her to Churchill is ludicrous he unified the nation and galvanised people to resist Hitler on every level which went a hell of a long way to us surviving, she divided the nation and turned the her back on her own people and sent in the police to destroy them, then"inspired"the great age of rampant selfish greed where those with most get more and those with the least get far less,it's just wrong and I too won't be engaging with it it's too much for me

And Lou, what you say is absolutely right. People talk about her being a strong leader and the first woman prime minister. As you say, she wasn't strong, she was a bully and a tyrant and, when history reflects on what she did, they will talk about the affect she had on women, the destruction she caused for them and how in many areas she destroyed families and whole communities forever.

Attila the Stockbroker, remember him for the 80s? I saw him a couple of years ago at a friend's gig and he was talking about caring for his mum who had Alzheimers, and how much he loved her. The whole room was in tears at the end of it, he said such beautiful things. He's performing for the Durham Miners today and has written a great piece about how this whole thing isn't about the death of a confused old lady, this is about what she did to society when she was anything but, and the effect of her policies on hundreds of thousands of old people.

Today, I shall remember my nanna, who died three months ago at the ripe old age of 98. She was a confused old lady but unlike Thatcher, she had to sell her home and its contents to pay for the specialist care she needed. No such thing as respect for her. x

Statement by Ernie Harburg, son of Ding Dong lyricist Yip.

Yip Harburg, lyricist of THE WIZARD OF OZ film, would have been amused that “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead” rose to the top of the charts when Margaret Thatcher died. W.S. Gilbert and George Bernard Shaw taught Yip Harburg, democratic socialist, sworn challenger of all tyranny against the people, that “humor is an act of courage” and dissent. Those who sang the song “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead” in the film THE WIZARD OF OZ celebrated the end of tyranny at the hands of the Wicked Witch of the East. That celebration was not in L. Frank Baum’s book. Yip’s artistic leadership put it into the film. (Yip also brought the rainbow, also not in the book, into the film.)

Yip said “Humor is the antidote to tyranny” and “Show me a place without humor and I’ll show you a disaster area.” Yip believed tyranny is caused by the policies of “austerity,” “imperialism,” “theocracy” and “class supremacy,” which deny most people human rights and economic freedom from poverty and want. A song – music and lyrics – allows singers and audiences to “feel the thought” of the lyric. “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead” is a universal cry against the cruelty of tyrants AND a protest against the ban on laughter at that cruelty. For the 99%, laughing and joy are required at the funeral of a tyrant. According to Yip, humor gives us hope in hard times.

ERNIE HARBURG

Thanks for that, Helen. Very apt. We went for a drink after work yesterday, not to drink to her death (that wouldn't feel right) but to drink to all those who suffered when she was in power. And I managed to avoid any coverage of the funeral.

Have just seen this petition on facebook against spending money on a museum to Mrs Thatcher - unbelievable that this has been proposed and typical if the government are backing this as alleged......... :?
