Really interesting piece on Channel 4 about the diversity of the Brit awards. ... 9/?fref=nf

Always thought it a load of bollocks but this year, it appears it is especially so. There is a petition #BritsSoWhite but surely it should be #BritsSoShite. Coming from the funk, soul sister side of the road, I find it laughable that no acts from popular but less mainstream genres are ever included. I don't like grime music – as my boys would say, you ain't sposed to, bra – but they are mighty enthusiastic about it and seem to see it as a form of protest to listen to it. As your man says, he doesn't shop in Selfridges, this is the voice of Poundland, albeit a tuneless, artless, disembodied one (but maybe that's what my mum would've said about Billy Bragg when I was 16...).

What say yous? x

The only thing that really decides who wins a Brit award is ££££££££. Therefore as an 'accolade' it is meaningless. It is an industry wankfest. therefore I don't care if it's too white.. too grey.. too disabled, not enough soy sauce or whatever the fuck. As an item of interest to genuine music lovers... well it isn't... let them get on with it and set your phaser to ignore.. I couldn't tell you who won what.. who wore what.. who said what or who was up for what... apart from me.. I'm up for a good nights sleep... hmm maybe watching the Brits will help with that..

I had no idea it was on. I was at school watching our production of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe".

How the hell was Any Winehouse in the running for British Female Solo Artist? And Florence & + x Machine whatever they call themselves? What a crock of shit. At least it's not still Annie Lennox every year.

I would be happy with Annie Lennox every other year.

She has good hair. Surprised the people in charge missed that one as an award category. x

Watched a bit of it last night - utter bollocks - should really have turned off when Simon Le Bon made his appearance. The 'awards' have very little to do with the quality of music - unfortunately just about the money and publicity - hence the desperate attempts from people like Rihanna.

I actually hate awards of any type other than those awarded in competitions where the aim is to be better, stronger, faster, score more goals or points, etc. How can you compare musicians, actors, artists, writers, etc. and claim one is better than all the rest? It's a nonsense. Oscars, Baftas, Turner Prizes, Booker prizes, Brit awards or whatever - they are all about money and publicity. I am always bewildered by them but the discussions prior to the awards and after them provide the publicity and being able to put 'Oscar winner' on the film blurb seems to legitimise it or putting 'Booker prize finalist' helps the book to sell.

Where I work we have prizes for students which are awarded before the graduation ceremony e.g. for the best dissertation (why? Isn't the highest mark enough?); the student who has overcome the most difficulties (you mean for the student who has vocalised their difficulties rather than the quiet more private student who has struggled in silence). Yes it is nice for the few students who get them and their parents but, fundamentally, I don't like them because of the notion that this person, artist, song, etc. is better than the others. It is purely subjective; it is not comparing like with like; it is creating a competition where there isn't one and can't possibly be one.

Rant over. X

I think there's definitely good, bad and everything in between. But comparing good with good? No way. There's what you personally like, and then there's Coldplay and techno.
