The actor/acting was fabulous from the charismatic Gene who was so much more compelling than the dreadful female lead (see I can't even remember her name) ... unlike the mesmerising John Sims ... and that's why ultimately Ashes to Ashes was just a caricature of Life on Mars. Wish I felt differently because love decent drama :(

I agree with all of the above. I really think they had a winner with 'Life on Mars' - but it was never sequel material. OK, the character of Gene Hunt was excellent and played well but credibility was stretched to the point where I was reminded of the infamous scene in 'Dallas' - where Pam wakes up to find that Bobby is still alive and taking a shower (and all the events in the previous series never happened).

There is to be another series of Ashes to Ashes I believe - but I think this cow's been milked enough already!

I didn't see much of Life on Mars, so probably enjoyed Ashes to Ashes more as a result. The music was great, there was a lot of comedy in it and I didn't take the plot seriously at all. It was good fun. I was not expecting it to end as it did with another series likely.
