WAR!!! what is it good for? Good god y-all! keep meaning to post on here, but something always comes up!

We stumbled upon the Hack Green 'secret' Nuclear Bunker in Cheshire during a North, midlands and south west tour (Cheshire, Birmingham, Shropshire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire - so expect more posts..)

It was an eerie kinda place, we went in about 90m before they were due to shut so were literally the last people wandering around in there.

It brought back the fear that I had as a child about the 'nuclear war' that i'd long forgotten. It's not a place for very young children (they would be bored very quickly if it wasnt for the rat spotting throughout - fake ones of course).

anyway, if you're passing it one day, then it's well worth a visit!

I find stuff like this very sinister.

We've got a War Room up here - not maintained or anything but it's still there - weird to think of the plans that must have been made and the conversations that took place in there!

There are a few in Essex - I've been to one and it was horrible............

I think they eventually sold it a couple of years ago - goodness knows what it is now! :?

Portsmouth and Portsdown Hill were riddled with 'secret' bunkers and the like ... not that it'd have saved anyone ... if there'd been a nuclear kicking off Portsmouth was major target, no one had a chance. We were still advised to take a door off and hide under the stairs though.

Anyhow, you've now got me thinking about an old compilation album I have somewhere ... Life In the European Theatre ...

Image

this is the listing for the japanese import (see above) which I think is the same as mine (but I have a kitten sleeping on my shoulder so can't go check) ...

1. The Clash - London Calling
2. The Jam - Little Boy Soldiers
3. The Beat - I Am Your Flag
4. The Specials - Man At C&A
5. XTC - Living Through Another Cuba
6. Peter Gabriel - I Don't Remember
7. Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3
8. Madness - Grey Day
9. Bad Manners - Psychedelic Eric
10. The Stranglers - Nuclear Device
11. The Undertones - It's Going To Happen
12. Echo & The Bunnymen - All That Jazz
13. The Au Pairs - Diet

1981 ... bloody hell ... great music ... crap world politics.

Its not very secret as it is signposted, we joke about it. :*: It is just up the road from me but we have not visited yet. You are right about that fear of nuclear war. I think every home had a contingency plan just in case. We did.

You had to saw the kitchen door off and wrap the dead bodies up and label them. Seriously.

Chilling public information film. Or is a Frankie Goes to Hollywood video?

Best advice appears to have been draw the curtains, hide in the cellar for five days and brush off any radioactive fallout from your clothes after an attack.

And, yes, wrap granny in cling film, prop her up in the box room and slap a label on the old girl!!

"Mandy, did you switch off your hair straighteners?!"
