So a couple of weeks ago we flexed the credit cards and flew out on a family holiday to Barbados. We had a brilliant time except for our timing on return - we were due to fly out last Thursday and our flight subsequently cancelled. We are killing time now so I thought I'd upload some pictures.

We had a great holiday, it's a brilliant place. The island is only about 20 miles long but there are so many different places, amazing beaches (naturally) and lots to do.

I took my camera and a couple of lenses like I normally do but couldn't be arsed to schlep them around most of the time (must be getting old).

I shot all my pics on my iPhone using the brilliant Hipstamatic app.

Here's a few favourites:

Shot in downtown Bridgetown. The Mrs. says 'Hope's Alley' sounds like a Hawley song :)

Edited to add that there are more pics on this tumblr blog I set up a while ago for my iphone photos - http://simonkemp.tumblr.com/

The basic camera is rubbish, but several apps are available which very much enhance the photos. I've got the iPhone 3G where the phone is utter pants without buying an app, but I believe the one in the 3GS is better. Fingers crossed when they announce the new phone they will have improved the camera.

Those are great so I've bought the app - lovely retro look to it.

I love the Hipstamatic app - although I haven't bought any of the in-app extras yet - were those taken on the basic app? They're really nice cross-processed shots.

Thanks for your kind words :)

The Hipstamatic app. is pretty cool but very slow to use. I guess it's all part of the 'experience' but it's a pain in the arse - 20 seconds or so between shots. In a strange way it kind of makes it worthwhile so I don't mind it so much.

The setup I have is the 'John S' lens and the 'Float' film. Sometimes the green cast is a bit strong but generally I like it. There are a couple of hundred combinations of film, lens and flash with the camera so you can spend all your life messing with them. Somebody has catalogued them all here: http://content.photojojo.com/static/hipstamatic/

BTW we are outta here tomorrow - got a flight to NYC and will stand a better chance of getting home from there I think.

Gorgeous stuff!

Are you still stuck?

They just showed a family from Yorkshire on the news, with no cell phones, no credit cards, rationing one meal a day and sitting on plastic chairs for days. Jeez, I'd have them over if I lived closer and could - just cause, you know, the accents remind me of some of you (in my head).

Thanks Karen, yes still stuck. Got a flight to NYC in a few hours. The cunning plan to get home will take me from NYC to Casablanca, Casablanca to Nice, Nice to Lille on the train and Eurostar to London... that's the plan

That sounds insanely exotic and under different circumstances, a fantastic trip. But this...I can't imagine.

Well, I fell asleep to that news report on that family. By morning, they had a home to stay in, offers of dinners out, movie night with local kids, soccer games. Other families are finding places. People can be rotten and people can be wonderful.

I can't imagine for all the people that saved for a dream trip, but can't afford the extra part, or who might lose jobs and things from all this.

Safe travels everyone!
