Durham is beautiful, just up the M1 from Newcastle, no idea where to recommend you stay but I have friends there so I could find out.
I dated a guy from there about three years ago, he was a lecturer from Durham university. I used to love going to visit him, it was like going on a mini break every other weekend! Beautiful place, or if you fancy the coast and have never been Northumberland is gorgeous and welll worth exploring.

Glasgow  - otherwise Edinburghs nice

Seriously Chester has the history and is also just over an hour from Mancland / Liverpool and the North Wales seaside - Colwyn Bay / Conway / Llandudno being the best bits .

York and Edinburgh are just lovely and there is so much to see - they are steeped in history. :D

Or you could go to the Peak District or the Lake District?

The world is your oyster! :D

I stand corrected.
Also noticed I said M1, I meant A1. Oh my goodness my brain has atrophied!
Must get back to work quick before I start to get the urge to watch Jeremy Kyle and Loose Women!!

I did the Halloween ghost walk which didn't start till midnight , can't remember all the places we went into but it included a graveyard - because of the particular day they had made a special effort to make it super scary. The pub beforehand was good as well.
