^ can't argue with any of that, the Dice Bar & The Long Hall in particular are two of my favourite city center pubs.
Also I'd add Hogans directly opposite The Long Hall which is worth a look, good music nice crowd and staff.
The Oak on Dame St is a nice bar to start off a night out it also has really good Djs on downstairs at weekends.
The Stags head is a proper old style Dublin bar, just located in a lane off Georges St. actually at the back of Sheebeen.
Whelan's on Wexford St can be good too if its not to packed.
If he's looking for a slight diversion away from town the Grave Diggers is only a short taxi ride (10 euros) away. Best pint of Guinness in the country, proper old style local, no TV etc, good folks there too......
hmm going for a pint in town tonight this is kinda whetting my appetite...

In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.
