a mate of mine is going on a stag do to Dublin and wants avoid the temple bar madness,he wants good pubs where there might be live music or a session maybe or just a solid great pub,i like the Lord Edward for starters and i know there are some fab pubs that i could recommend but not sure if they have changed their vibe or closed down could some of our Dublin friends help me please i would greatly appreciate it?they are all good men and not rowdy idiots at all and i want to spare them the nightmare of spewing english male and female fuck wits pissed out of their minds......i reckon they will get pissed of course but not like that. Thanks in advance ..>

O'Sheas was pretty good I remember. Good Guinness and live music.

It is on Talbot Street, off O'Connel Street, so North of the River away from Temple Bar.

The Cobblestone in Smithfield-great old pub- often has trad, folk or acoustic type gigs

The Dice Bar- Smithfield-- rockabilly, rock and roll, country DJs at weekends

The Long Hall- Georges Street- just a great old pub

Grogans- South William Street-proper bar-good pints and chat, some of the worst art you've ever seen on the walls

O'Donohues-Baggot Street-trad- once home to the Dubliners-will probably be full of American tourists

Bruxelles-Harry Street-off Grafton St- rock, blues bar- statue of Phil Lynott outside

McDaids- oppostie Bruxelles- legendary drinking den of Brendan Behan

Bordering on Temple Bar mania pubs :

Ha'Penny Bridge- nice pub..live music, bluegrass, country blues upstairs-sometimes comedy nights

Sweeney Mongrel, Dame Street-- live music, DJs playing rock and roll, surf, garage, punk etc

The Gypsy Rose- Aston Quay-rock, metal, blues, rockabilly DJs, live music downstairs

Shebeen- Georges Street- live music downstairs

I'll post more if i think of any

^ can't argue with any of that, the Dice Bar & The Long Hall in particular are two of my favourite city center pubs.

Also I'd add Hogans directly opposite The Long Hall which is worth a look, good music nice crowd and staff.

The Oak on Dame St is a nice bar to start off a night out it also has really good Djs on downstairs at weekends.

The Stags head is a proper old style Dublin bar, just located in a lane off Georges St. actually at the back of Sheebeen.

Whelan's on Wexford St can be good too if its not to packed.

If he's looking for a slight diversion away from town the Grave Diggers is only a short taxi ride (10 euros) away. Best pint of Guinness in the country, proper old style local, no TV etc, good folks there too......

hmm going for a pint in town tonight this is kinda whetting my appetite...

I saw an elsebound train, on the overpass
In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

I've booked me holidays for this year...

Though I'm sure the pubs in Whitby / Staithes and Berwick / Spittal will be fine :)

Mind you I've not booked for October yet...

We had a day trip to Dublin on my daughter's 18th Birthday. We had a drink in a few pubs but I can't remember the names. We had a great day and it was nice to get in touch with my Irish roots.

o'donahues. ahh, i remember it well. we accosted a local when we got off the ferry and asked him to take us to the most traditional pub he knew. he looked like something out of 'puckoon'. he took us to the nearest pub off the ferry, turn right and it's a couple of hundred yards down can't remember the name but it was full of men with faces like king edward potatos, really friendly and the guinness was just heavenly.
