Off to Budapest on Thursday for a long weekend.

Anyone have any must see / do?

Lucky boy...........Budapest is a lovely city.
We went in December a few years ago and had a great time.Try and walk between the sights as often as you can,and have a peep in all the open courtyards.The architecture is stunning,loads of palaces now turned into museums,grand old houses that are mainly falling down and plenty of odd art deco houses.
Make sure you get up to Buda Castle and Gellert Hill for the views.If you have time,check out Memento Park,a fascinating open air museum and resting place for all the communist era statues.
Andrassy Ave. is a nice walk for shopping and the Opera House.
For food,we tried to stay as authentic as possible and had some fabulous meals.

the last socialist cafe is a must,i saw a cymbalom orchestra there,i just vibed on walking around its a boss city,last time i was there they still had bullet holes in the walls on some of the buildings and partially blown up walls that were left on purpose,there's a place outside the city where they put all the huge statues of Stalin and Lennin etc after the fall of the USSR which is truly amazing,i went with Pulp there are photo's somewhere of it.....but its a really affecting place where you see the statues of mighty leaders partially overgrown with bird shit all over them.......certainly makes you think....i bought a Submarine Captains watch from the"Gift shop"for a quid.......i still have it and it works....hope you have a top time i would love to go again......oh and er.....bring us some smoked paprika back mate....ta

You can spend hours on the internet, but I don't think you can beat personal
recommendations.

I'm not one for guided tours..."everyone follow me, turn right at the end"!!
Well, what about left, where does that go, what's down there.....you get
what I mean.

Really looking forward to it, weather forecast isn't too bad, cold but dry
and bright, ideal for plenty of walking, coffees and later on beers.

So Boss, Smoked Paprika...........You a bit of a chefy type then!!

Had a fantastic weekend in Budapest. For the time of year the weather
was excellent, cold but clear sunny skies. We used the public transport,
bus train and underground, but with plenty of walking on both the Buda
side and Pest side of the Danube.

The architecture and buildings are magnificent, some renovated with
lots of care and others that haven't changed at all, almost falling down.

The one downside is you look up at a lovely 4 or 5 storey building, only
to find fucking McDonald's on the ground floor!

The Shoes on the Danube Promenade was very moving. You don't get
the same feeling looking at the pictures. Have a look if you go.

Local beer and food was top notch. I look like a bowl of goulash!

Recommend it before it changes too much.

Budapest is definitely going on my list now....

Yes...when I was living in former East Germany...I saw some incredible demolition..once I spent all day watching some Russian military buildings pulled down....very impressive...when the clouds of dust started to finally clear..I remember seeing the "iconic" (?)..golden M......of McDonalds....talk about phoenix rising from the ashes ! I was really in the right spot at the right time that day...although without camera..
