Our prehistoric ancestors were a well travelled lot. 5000 years ago (give or take a hundred years or so), they built this village on Orkney Mainland (bit of a misnomer as it's actually an island!). Many years later, they abandoned it (we don't know why) and the sand swept over it, leaving it buried and preserved until the mid 19th century when, one night, a massive storm revealed it. It's incredibly well preserved and, looking down into each of the interlinked dwellings, you can really imagine the lives of the people who lived out their lives in this remote part of the British Isles.
It draws me back time and again - as do the stone circles, Maes Howe and all the other fascinating archaelogical sites in Orkney. It's well worth a trip!
