I'm still unemployed and it was a public holiday in Edinburgh so my beloved had the day off ..... so a trip round the Trossachs today. A lovely sunlit walk by Loch Katrine - apart from the birdsong it was total silence - just perfect. (stopped short of hiring a tandem though!)

Great photo Prudence .I biked up there when I was a kid and camped there for a night (it rained during the night and I was soaking!) - we had chips in nearby Callendar . Ah the memories ....

I try and go up the west coast every year. It's an amazing place. My favourites are Plockton near the Kyle of Lochalsh and Glen Coe - I always stop and sit on a rock + ponder. I went across to the outer hebrides on the motorcycle about 2 years ago - that was quite spectacular too.

Hey Luckyman - did you go to Stirling castle on one of the Historic Scotland open days? Isn't it a good idea - to open their doors for free on one weekend of the year. We went to Edinburgh castle - it was mobbed. Is their anything similar in England anyone know?

They have something like that in London - as far as I know its mainly for places that aren't normally open such as Mansion House and some of the other state/government owned historic buildings.................

Yeah, I had a brilliant holiday in Scotland some years ago.

I was with my old German flame at the time...we went walking in the mountains around Fort William.....and got totally lost!
He blamed me of course..and got really pissed off ,as he got blisters from his unsuitable foot wear................and I wasn't taking things too seriously.we walked miles and miles and miles....................it was beautiful up there......................................................I remember drinking water out of a running stream, and it was sweet and really cold...............

One weekend in August/early September most of Britain has an open weekend, and in London Open House Weekend is usually the third weekend in September. Lots of places open or arrange guided tours.

I've been into several - Marlborough House, the India Office, Westminster Hall (the original mediaeval one), seen the Government Art Collection in one of their offices in Trafalgar Square, Guildhall to name a few.

Some places that normally charge open for free. Private homes designed by modern Architects are opened up (these tend to attract huge queues).

Nearer the time it's worth looking at the web site (google Open House London).

Yeah Prudence , It was during the free weekend - anything to save some money ! With the saving I managed to buy a bottle of Drumgray cream liqueur from the castle shop - so much better than Bailey's - it went down a treat . :D

Spent a few days near St Fillans following the Perth gig last week. We stayed in a log cabin on the banks of the River Earn - it was beautiful and the weather was gorgeous too. Pics below are Loch Ness, Log Cabin back garden, A Mariner's grave at The Trossach's Church and New Lanark (a Scottish equivalent to Saltaire):
