I chose Last Orders as the "entry music" for me ma's funeral last week. It was perfect in every way.

So nice one RH if youre reading, and sorry about any copyright infringements. ;)

Thanks, i appreciate it.

Me ma was 51 when she died, bravely fighting cancer til her last breath. She was a special person. Me arl'fella proposed after a week of knowing her, they married a few months later and after 34 years only her passing has kept them apart.

Without wishing to sound too corny, good music is helping me get by... and that has certainly meant a fair bit of Hawley! So thanks for that too.

Me ma never thought much of my music, but i had almost finished a new number just for her, more to her tastes. Sadly she never got to hear it, so i'll play it every so often for her and i know what she'd have said...

"you need a good hair cut boy, and whoever told you you could sing was a liar" :D

Rest in peace ma.

a good friend of mine has just lost his dad and i saw him in the pub last night its so so hard to get over it but you will and lost loved one's will eventually make you smile as much as the memory makes you cry......i'm learning day by day,the hardest thing i have found is trying to remember that there are people around you that are here and NOW,grief is all encompassing at times,i remind myself to tell my children and my wife that they know that i love them and not to let the hurt exclude them and friends too,not easy at times, all kindness to your family, not much use over the bloody internet but all the same i mean it.

Well, sometimes one might have the impression that even those strong feelings seem to volatilise. But they'll never leave you. Neither the happy nor the sad ones. They keep returning like waves on a beach.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Walter.

I'm probably older than most forum members and lost my dad 19 years ago and my mum 11 years ago. But it's true, and hopefully comforting to know, that those special memories and feelings for your mum and dad never fade and remain vividly ingrained with you through passage of your own life.

Incidentally, our local BBC east midlands tv news are running a special feature this weak on poverty in old age and are using the first couple of bars of Last Orders at the introduction to the feature.

I lost my mam when I was 22 and my dad at 23 - it was very, very hard to bear, and I don't suppose it's any easier when you lose folk when you're a bit older.

I feel very sad for those who've lost, I hope you can take some comfort from your loved ones and those of us in cyberspace who are giving you a little room in our thoughtsxxx

lost my own dear dad on valentines day, so many of richards songs bring memories flooding back. i had introduced dad to his divine-ships beautiful music on his birthday when we went horse- racing, and he was a fan. ladys bridge makes me weep , and "tonight the streets are ours" has poignancy, cos dad was a good old liberal/socialist type. yes , richards music is deeply comforting, as well as heart breakingly beautiful. dad also insisted on keeping a photo of r.h. with his twins in london at the hosp[ital gig. so definitely a fan.
the forum members also seem to be a great bunch, who are genuine, and dont just deal in the usual platitudes.
as richard says,"keep me in your heart"

Really sorry to hear of your loss Walter; your post struck a chord with me because I'm the same age as your mum. I lost my own dad last summer, but he was 79 and had had a long and fulfilled life. The lovely people on the forum were a huge source of comfort and sound advice and helped me through a very difficult year. As Richard said, the grief doesn't go away, but you do learn to deal with it and with time, you somehow learn to cope with it. I find that just listening to a piece of music or remembering a happy family occasion makes me both smile and cry. At times now I can just laugh and smile at fond memories without the tears; it does take time though. Your mum would have loved your choice of 'Last Orders' for her funeral. God Bless your mum and take care of yourself x

Walter, to echo the sentiments already posted I feel for you. People grieve in different ways, and the first few weeks are tough but try not to push away those you love, and don't be afraid to show emotion. After my dad died, I held myself together for 18 months, allowed work to consume almost all my time and energy ... and then went into meltdown. Six years on I still have wonderful memories and have the occasional emotional moment (not just sadness but occasionally anger) - this year I spent his birthday in Fife visiting St Andrews ... he'd have loved it. Cyber-hug, and I don't think I'll be able to listen to Last Orders again without thinking what a fitting send off. Take care.
