7. Coles Corner - Richard Hawley (Mute, 2005) - Britpop survivor knocking on middle age delivers stunning album of orchestral, reverb-soaked romanticism that manages to evoke an age of smoking in cinemas and afternoon pub closing. The transformation from local hero to national treasure started here.

National treasure? Makes Mr H sound like Barbara Woodhouse, Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards or Esther Rantzen. :*:

My ISP's welcome page today provides a link to www.spinnermusic.co.uk who have compiled their own top 20 albums of the 'noughties'. Not sure what authority Spinnermusic carry but it is good to see that Coles Corner sits at no.16. Elbow's Seldom Seen Kid is at no.8. No.1 is Radiohead's In Rainbows.

Guy Garvey recently played Coles Corner on his radio show on 6Music. He said it was the most Christmassy sounding record he knew which wasn't about Christmas. Love that man! :)

There is some prats writing comments underneath, but pretty good and varied list! Of course I agree with number 1! :)

Cole's Corner is a very - very nice and sensitive song with beautiful lyrics !!!

"I'm going down town where there's people
The loneliness hangs in the air.
With no-one there real waiting for me,
No smile, no flower nowhere"

Aaah Mr Hawley ... you wrote a song about the loneliness that everyone of us has lived, maybe for a while .... The "message" I take from this song is "don't be afraid of the loneliness, the life has pleasures even though we are alone" ....

I also liked the video of this song very much, with Richard and the blonde woman !!!

In every town and every city is a place like Cole's Corner where the couples are meeting !!! For example, in the city of Thessaloniki, in Greece, is a place called "Camara" [Καμάρα]. This place is in a square near the university of Thessaloniki with an ancient "Camara" from the Roman Years !!! This square is a meeting - point for the couples of students that they are in love [  ] .......

When I heard for first time Mr Hawley's song "Coles Corner" .... I remembered "Camara" and my dates when I was student in Thessaloniki .... Mr Hawley, many thanks for this .....

Kostas from Greece [I'm so sorry for my English   ] .....

Coles Corner is a lovely sensitive song that indeed captures exactly the same message for me as what you describe Kostas.....I come from Sheffield and know 'Coles Corner'......but it could be anywhere in the world.......

Going back to the original hand drawn picture posted here. There's something very odd about the whole thing. Why is the policeman wearing a night shirt? Why is the kid having sex with the lamp post?

Simpler days back then chief - it didn't matter what you wore or what you had sex with. Makes me sad every time the street lights flicker in to action each night, knowing never again will I make love to a lamp post.(legally at least)

Can't let a Coles Corner thread go without a plea to see if anyone has a spare copy of this superb record on vinyl they'd be prepared to part with.

I suppose that in the last four years you've had time to find this, but I've seen no reference to it in this forum (I'm browsing through old posts whenever I've got some spare time, and I've found this thread when trying to found out the location of the 'Coles Corner' single sleeve. Where is that?)

Hey Toffee boy,

I do have a copy of coles corner in Vinyl. I do not own a deck.
I need cash to bespoke-frame prints dear to my heart.
That costs a fortune.
It will cost you a fortune!

PM me your max bid.

I also have a "Lowedges" if anyone interested.
And i reckon i can get my hands on a Truelove's gutter too.
(It's just that i don t listen to vinyl, and i need cash as i said)

First two bought in Sheffield (so the fair will be included in the price!)

Otherwise toffee boy, there's one going at the moment on Ebay:
