I assumed it was the name of the slave? Probably totally wrong ....

"The spelling could be anything from Challo, Shallow & Shiloh. Hugill points to this as West Indian in origin, saying Challo is West Indian for half caste & that this song passed through the cotton ports of the south as a cotton screwing chant. I'd add on to that, (aside form this version possibly being of the older versions) that some of the cotton plantations ran their own ships & supplied them with their own slave crews when the land work was slow. These ships traded in all North Alantic & Caribbean ports & that the hope of some was to jump ship in Haiti or England or go whaling or sailoring elsewhere, rather than be slave hands to be resold as needed."

Another interpretation from the same thread -

"Shallow brown, was the warning cry given by lookouts on cotton traders around the coasts of south and central America. Being mainly sub tropical rainforested areas, the rivers running through these areas are mostly dark (tannin stained) or muddy brown. This brown water emties into the sea and hugs the coastal shallows before being diluted and dispersed, also most ports are situated at rivermouths or upriver, therefore if asailor spotted brown water he could be sure he was getting into the shallows and was near a rivermouth and port."

I agree, the sleeve is fantastic, front and back, the pictures are very atmospheric.

Bought the EP in FOPP yesterday and I absolutely love it. Remorse Code is such a great song. There's A Storm A Comin' might be Richard's best ever. And the sea shanties are incredible. :D
