ohh I love the Skatalites & Max Romeo, this is ace...

I'll have to keep an eye out for that Rico album, I have heard lots about em but not checked him out yet properly. Burning Spear-Marcus Garvey = stone cold classic.

I saw an elsebound train, on the overpass
In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

the skatalites "ball of fire"
this is a corker too. the last album with the original original skatalites, and featuring the wonderful ernest ranglin on guitar. reworkings of some old hits but brilliantly played and recorded. i was lucky enough to see them in manchester just before roland alphonso passed away. they were as great as you'd wish.

Now you've all got me thinking of The Beat - didn't they do a version of "Can't get used to losing you"? Didn't two of them go on to form the Fine Young Cannibals? Got Roland Gift singing in my head now.

the congos "heart of the congos" fabulous record, lee perry in his finest pomp. great singing and thick and sticky, the only decent thing pimply red ever did was set up blood and fire records.

This is a bloody masterpiece!

and then there's prince buster, and the skatalites, and max romeo, and, and.......

... Laurel Aitken (sadly no longer with us; he imho was one of the best)
... Derrick Morgan
... the wonderful Doreen Shaffer (the Skatalites singer)
and - as mentioned - Ernest Ranglin - fantastic!

(I have to plug some of my friends' stuff here: http://www.myspace.com/theseniorallstars )

Only yesterday I came across this band, featuring personnel from the Medway scene as the brilliant Bruce Brand:

Anyone got the Trojan 'tighten up' comps from the late '60's/early '70's - there's a song on vol 2 called 'wreck a buddy' and it's verrrry rude.
