Should be groovy.

Enjoyed the documentary, especially Geoff Travis' selective memory about the demise of Rough Trade (mark 1)

Am spinning this to revive some other memories....

I used to shop in Rough Trade in 1979/80. The documentary showed the shop as I remember it and it was everything we ever wanted a record shop to be. Most of the staff behind the counter were in bands and they were so passionate about music. The documentary was brilliant and as part of our musical heritage it's something we should all be interested in. I was sad enough in the old days to trust in Rough Trade and would buy most records they released, just as I did with Factory. Although the docu showed us where we've been it gave little hope for the future and for me it appeared that Rough Trade and it's original spirit have been dampened by the corporates. Geoff and his cohorts have done brilliant wonderous things so I am not for one moment suggesting they have let us down. Market forces have changed as a result of the force that Rough Trade put upon them.

Seeing the old record sleeves made out of paper stapled together and stamped with rubber stamps just made me feel we've lost so much through technology that has swallowed the music business.

It appears that we now subscribe more than ever to convention. Digital downloads, Myspace and all the other new ways of "promoting" music appear dull and lifeless compared with what Rough Trade promoted back in the late 70's.

I was inspired by the documentary and I felt re-invigorated by being reminded of what can be achieved by taking risks rather than following convention.

I bought the Normal 7" when it came out and Mr Daniel Miller, the man behind the record launched Mute Records through the support of Rough Trade. You know the rest.

Let this documentary be a reminder to all of us....

As a teenager I bought used The Smiths and Aztec Camera record,
I became a big fan of Rough Trade label.

I think Rough Trade is one of the greatest record labels in the world.

I had no idea about the 'ethos' behind the starting and running of the label til the other nite.

The best bit of this documentary was just the simple fact that a local independent record shop could sell over a 1,000 copies of just one album in just 1 day or was in week? Either way, thats quite something and I miss that shit. Independent record shops at their peak that is.

I'm sure the 1,000 plus copies of the first Clash album must be some kind of record.

It was a week I think but that is alot more measurable than downloads the new commodity of how we 'deal' in music these days.
