I am on my Easter hols at the moment in the sunny Caribbean (it's a rough life I know) and quite bizarrely I've heard a couple of Hank Williams tunes amongst the steady diet of dub reggae in the bars on the on the streets.

It's my first time in this neck of the woods and I've never really been into reggae at all but was reading the reggae thread on here and wondered if anyone could tell me what the deal is? Is country music popular with the Rastas or is it just a freaky coincidence?. Ta in advance.

Many reggae artists tend to be not only reggae lovers but love music in general right accross the genres, hense the amount of cover versions of various styles. Check this out...

I saw an elsebound train, on the overpass
In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

I don't know where in the caribbean you are but C&W is the most popular music on some of the islands namely St Lucia, due to the U.S. army having bases there in the 40's & 50's.
In Jamaica the national music pre reggae was mento. The classic mento sound is acoustic, informal, folksy rural style sometimes referred to as country music in Jamaica,it was in the 60's that mento split into ska then reggae. Many musicians went to work in america where they would learn to play popular U.S. C&W and R&B tunes then return to play these tunes for the tourists to the caribbean. There's been loads of classic C&W cover versions recorded in their own unique style, check out that compilation Eoin has listed,it's brilliant.

You mean you've never heard this....?!!! Willie and many reggae artists share a love for relaxational herbs, so it was only logical that he recorded a reggae CD - it's not as bad as it might sound, actually.

Thanks lads, much appreciated. Never been into the old reggae as I said. Such a weird experience, hearing hearing reggae tunes in the street with the B A S S very loud, then cutting straight to "Your Cheating Heart". Weird but quite cool :) Thanks for the album recommendations as well, I'll be checking those out when I get back to Blighty.

Coincidentally I came across this just now

Jimmy C. Newman from the Grand Ole Opry show in 1965 coming perilously close to skanking along there :)
