Supergrass have announced they are to split up.

The band, joking, sighted a "17-year itch" for the reason to call it a day after six studio albums.

“Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years," explained the group in a statement. "We still love each other but, cliché notwithstanding, musical differences have led to us moving on and of course we all wish each other well in the future."

The band had been working on a new album, but there is no word on whether this will be released or not.

Supergrass are set to play four farewell shows, with tickets going on sale on Friday (April 16) at 9am (BST).

Glasgow Barrowland (June 8)
Manchester Academy (9)
London O2 Academy Brixton (10)
Paris La Cigalle (11)

great band. In It For The Money Is one of the finest record of the 1990's and one of my all time favourites, the albums they made over the last few years were fucking good too even if they wernt as popular as some of their earlier stuff. I think I'll have to stick Sun Hits The Sky on full blast.

In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

Idon't use the term 'underrated' lightly, but it's entirely applicable to Supergrass. Pity they've split but unfortunately it seems like the best thing for them.

I agree I Should Coco and In It For The Money fricking brilliant albums!! I didn't realise they had been going so long, it's a shame but maybe for the best.

Despite being a local band I only really got into them last year. Saw them twice last year; at the local Truck Festival and at a Christmas special gig here in Oxford. When playing live they were - to use another overused word - awesome. Not totally surprised at the split because of the recent Hot Rats stuff from just Gaz and Danny. I just hope that we get to hear more from them all, whatever they do.

I loved this band in the 90's & up to Life On Another Planets. Couldn't get on with the last 2 much though. I was working in a record shop when the 2nd album came out & I made sure that was on heavy rotation. It's a brilliant album that for some reason got a bit of a muted reception from the public when it came out for not being up to scratch next to the debut. Actually it pisses all over it. I mean, come on...

And as for this, what a beautiful song.

Brilliant voice, brilliant tunes, shit hot players, brilliant harmonies, brilliant live. I'm going to go see them in Manc, they don't make em like this anymore :(

too true, sadly I wont get to see them before they split, saw them twice before and they were awesome, rocked like bastards and really looked to be enjoying themselves playing too, your right they don't quite make em like that any more.

On a side note has anyone checked out Gaz & Danny's side project Hot Rats yet ? album and live shows got good reviews must pick me up a copy.

thought Supergrass were ace, reminds me of my yoof dancing to 'Caught By The Fuzz' at the Leadmill! last album i got was 'Diamond Hoo Haa' really good album, thought they were always consistnet and not afraid to stray from the normal formulae too.
managed to see them live a couple of times, last time was when the 'best of' came out and they did a stripped down acoustic set, fantastic band that will be missed!!

I Should Coco was probably my favourite album of the britpop era. Saw them live in their heyday and they were almost perfect.
