I don't know if there is another topic, about Felt somewhere, but I feel compelled to start one. I mentioned in "Culture" strand about "Lawrence of Belgravia" (which is a brilliant film BTW), but I'd gone into it quite cold (only knew of Lawrence through Denim) and only afterwards did I check out the songs on Youtube.

Wow, what a revelation! I absolutely love them! Why I'd never heard anything by them before now is a mystery to me. Granted Lawrence's vocal stylings are an aquired taste, but the lyrics are gorgeous and the music is that meloncholy 80's jangly guitar I absolutely love.

Highlights:
Black Ship in the Harbour
Penelope Tree
Primative Painters (feat. Liz Frazer)
Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow

amongst others.

Anyone else have a soft spot for Felt?

One of the best bands ever for me Maurice Deebank is a fabulous guitarist totally unique I was into them from the first album in fact I may very well play it right now

I agree. One of the great lost gems of the 1980's. I'm still kicking myself that I didn't know them before now.

If you get the opportunity, watch the film. It's funny in places, but ultimately utterly heartbreaking in retrospect.

Exactly;that was the one i would have mentioned;it's a lovely album altogether but that particular song"silver fountain of paradise square" is outstanding;i wonder what he's doing these days since there's no updated info about him on the internet basically since he left the band.

As for Lawrence, undoubtedly a very very unfairly underrated singer-songwriter;not only with Felt but also Denim and Go Kart Mozart;glad you've mentioned him,i shall watch that film too.

From what I can gather from various forums and details are sketchy, Deebank suffered a rather nasty work related injury.

I agree with you about Denim and GKM. They are rather fun. I especially like "Synthesisers in the Rain" by the former, and "Listening to Marmalade" by the latter.

I found "Summer Smash" by Denim on Youtube. This was banned by the BBC in 1997 for being "inappropriate" because the week it became available, Princess Diana died in a car crash. EMI then proptly recalled and inscinerated all the copies!!! (despite the fact it had fuck all to do with Car crashes - unlike "Airbag" by Radiohead on OK Computer - also released by erm... EMI (!)

Pity really, because it's a top tune!

On the GKM front, the new album "On The Hot Dog Streets" (where does Lawrence get such fab titles?!) is due out in January.

Hi Saraha. Thought might like to know that Felt are doing a PA at Rough Trade East this Friday at 7pm. Showing clips from Lawrence of Belgravia and talking about a new book. Then they're DJing their favourite records and signing copies of their book. Sounds like it might be right up your street!

Josie, don't wish to bust your bubble, but I did actual post a link earlier in the thread. I don't think I'll be able to make it though. I got money problems at the moment.

edit: Sold out apparently.
