Great discussion on the Today programme on Radio 4 this morning about why some British artists sing in American accents. Pat Kane from Hue and Cry was leading it (have a secret crush on him because he's so brainy), at around 8.15 if you want to catch it on Listen Again. Would be interested on what you think, H. I'm in the fantasy camp myself... x

for me, it depends on the song/singer- i dont care if someone sings in an "american" accent- i dont think that makes it fake or unauthentic etc... the fact is that people grow up listening to american songs for better or worse and it does carry over

I've always figured that's just the way it comes out unless you have a really pronounced accent. Many Southerners here sing with (for lack of a better term) a "normal" American accent - think of Elvis. On the other hand, Keith Urban sounds funny to me. He's Australian and sings with a twang. In the early 80s, we had a few Los Angeles punk bands that sang with English accents - that was funny!

Monkey, you'll love this. I managed once to get in the middle of a kerfuffle between one of those
bands and Black Grape. Oh they did not like the pseudo punk pretenders and their fake wanna
be Clash accents. Oh no.

I haven't really noticed Brit bands trying to sound American so much as some being a bit accentless--like newscasters. Or it just sounds a wee bit goofy, like me singing along in a
bad Beatley accent. I don't ape an accent in real life, but I write and talk to so many Brits,
my syntax is halfway across the ocean half the time.

I can't stand it.

I'm not saying everyone should necessarily sing in a regional accent, just what comes naturally, and I can't stand it when people affect false accents.

On the flip side of that, I never really thought about it before - I've got a pretty strong accent when I talk (which is often :D ) but I lose my accent completely when I sing, dunno why that should be. :?

I want to sing like Paul Rodgers but it comes out like Vic Reeves - still both from the North East...

I don't care that much, but I draw the line at rapping in an Irish accent. Just wrong.
