Prompted by the lovely Nick and Desperado, one of his Guilty Pleasures, I thought I might kick this off, mostly because my music collection is full of them but there might be some that I felt so guilty about that I instantly forgot.

I will kick off with two...

Wichita Lineman, Glen Campbell. It's just beautiful and I listen to it most days, just cos it makes me happy.

I also love Hall & Oates, I know it's cheese but it's ace. Get you coat, Daryl, you've pulled...

What are yours?

What's guilty about Glen Campbell?!?!?

I think you’re using a post-modern interpretation of the concept of guilt, Monkey Boy. And it’s based on your nubility and general youngfulness.

Example: the other day Debs (Lady Blue) was telling me she went to a vintage fair with her daughter. Debs was thinking they’d have a mooch around some 50s and 60s clothes but it turned out her daughter's idea of vintage was batwing jumpers and ra-ra skirts from the 1980s. Vintage to her were just the old shit in my wardrobe I hadn’t got round to clearing out.

You may be applying this interpretation to Glen Campbell, who is very cool now but to me, the pleasure of his music is definitely guilty. This is because of the Glen I knew – in the 70s, he was the musical interlude in the Val Doonican Music Show; the first choice of the tribute act down the working mens’ club, the one your parents and all their friends would get up and line dance to; the cassette tape that your embarrassing uncle would put on at house parties you were forced to go to with your folks. He wasn’t the Skids, or the Pistols, or Bowie or The Faces. He sat on the same shelf as Vince Hill, Matt Monro, Kenny Rodgers and Neil Sedaka.

Now that doesn’t mean that he’s not good and that some people on his shelf weren’t the best. Matt Monro is arguably among the finest singers ever to come out of this fair isle. But, me taking pleasure in Wichita Lineman was definitely guilty – if I’d ever had admitted that to my mates at school, I’d have been slaughtered.

Glen Campbell, to me, will always be seen through the fawn and beige colouring of the 70s, and there's nothing post modern about that.

You ken? x

I guess, but it doesn't make him guilty now.

Donny Osmond. Not now but if I hear Puppy Love I still well up inside thinking I am going to marry him.
Leo Sayer - Just a Boy (album) and song from the album Giving it all Away. I think Rod Stewart sang it too.

I'll get me coat.........

I'm worried about you Egg...

Dickster, my grandad loved Gilbert O'Sullivan. Clair, it was. And the Brotherhood of Man, he used to sing Save All Your Kisses for me and dance with me around the living room. xxx

I've always liked Gilbert O'Sullivan with "Nothing Rhymed" & "Alone again Naturally" being 2 of my favourite tracks. But its the lyrics that get me. For example...

"When I'm drinking my Bonaparte Shandy
Eating more than enough apple pies
Will I glance at my screen and see real human beings starve to death
Right in front of my eyes" .... Nothing Rhymed
Released in 1970, this verse more than likely refers to the famine in Biafra which was the first exposure for many people in the west to a humanitarian crisis in Africa. They have always stuck in my mind

and this always brings a lump to my throat.....

"Now looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn’t understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally" (sorry)

Gilbert O'Sullivan, greatly underappreciated

I never use the term 'guilty', but I listen to plenty of "eyebrow raisers".

Gilbert is a brilliant songwriter.
